The 2024 Henan Archaeological New Discoveries Forum will be held in Zhengzhou on the 12th. The reporter learned that in 2024, archaeologists discovered a combination of Acheli technical tools such as hand axes, thin cutting axes, and large stone knives at the hot spring site in Ruzhou City, Henan Province, marking the first discovery in the Central Plains region. The hot spring site is located in the ancient river channel of Niujian River in Wenquan Town, Ruzhou City. The relics are distributed over an area of 100000 square meters, and the site dates back to about 100000 to 40000 years ago. It is preliminarily judged that it is a temporary activity site for ancient humans to select stone materials, process stone tools, and slaughter animals on the riverbank, which is a large Paleolithic wilderness site. Zhao Qingpo, deputy researcher of Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, introduced that archaeologists discovered more than 8000 pieces of stone products, animal fossils, wooden materials, etc. at the hot spring site. Among them, the combination of Acheli technology tools such as hand axes, thin edged axes, and large stone knives unearthed from the original strata of the hot spring site is the first discovery in the Central Plains region, filling the gap in the development of Paleolithic culture in the region. Ashili technology is an important link in the development of human stone tool technology, originating in Kenya and dating back approximately 1.76 million years. The academic community believes that the standardized production and dissemination of Acheulean industry provide key clues for studying early human cognitive evolution, migration routes, and environmental adaptation. Zhao Qingpo introduced that currently, only Sichuan, Shaanxi, Guangxi, Danjiangkou Reservoir Area and other places in China have discovered the combination of Acheli technology tools. The Beilu River Basin in Henan Province, where the hot spring site is located, will become another area in China where Acheli technology is more concentrated. This discovery provides important materials for the study of the technological system of China's North South Paleolithic industry, East West Paleolithic industry, the dissemination and evolution of Acheulean technology, and the origin of modern humans.
