Inheriting the ancient charm of Tibetan opera and showcasing the new appearance of young people
2025-03-14
From February 11 to the evening of February 14, Xizang's first children's stage play, "Dunyue Dunzhu", was performed four times in a row at the Tibetan Opera Art Center of the Autonomous Region. After each performance, the director and other creative team, along with the young actors, take the stage to bid farewell. The prolonged applause echoes through this theater with over 700 seats. The children's acting skills are somewhat immature: their singing style and unclear enunciation cannot erase their genuine emotions on stage. The children's performances are better than each other, and the last two are almost perfect. A historical legend that praises truth, goodness, and beauty, and criticizes falsehood, evil, and ugliness, with the interpretation of a group of children and teenagers aged 5 to 18, has greater contemporary spirit, educational significance, and aesthetic value. The most touching thing about children is their sincerity. In the words of one of the directors of the children's stage play "Dun Yue Dun Zhu", Yun Dengluo, "From the initial 'crossing the river by feeling the stones', to the successful premiere of the 2023 Xuedun Festival, and now to the performance, the creative team's requirements for children have once again increased - they need to do their homework in the details of the performance and perform truthfully on stage. They have all done it, they are amazing!" "Little Plum Blossom" opens a new narrative of traditional famous plays. The two main actors, dressed in costumes, stand under the spotlight with ethereal and high pitched Tibetan opera singing, accompanied by drums and cymbals, opening up the fog of time and telling the story of two ancient princes; On both sides of the stage and backstage in the dressing room, more young actors are eager to try, waiting for the waiting teacher's command: "Quick! Quick! It's your turn to go on stage." On the stage, the performances of the young actors constantly change with the accompaniment of the cymbals, and the plot and story are also driven by the sound of the cymbals, with ups and downs. In the rhythm of the drum and cymbal hands, known as the soul of Tibetan opera, which are crisp and clear, or fast-paced and orderly, the whole play gradually moves from a gentle narrative to a climax. The young Tibetan opera drummer with a slightly robust figure but still unable to conceal his high spirits is none other than 17-year-old Gesang Jiancai. He has been exposed to Tibetan opera art since childhood and has a natural talent for Tibetan opera art. Under the guidance of his parents, who are professional Tibetan opera actors, he systematically received guidance from professional teachers such as Tibetan opera artists Zhaxi Wangjie and Yundeng Luobu at an early age, gradually forming his own unique singing style and enjoying the nickname of "Tibetan opera prodigy". At the end of 2021, at the age of 13, Gesang Jiancai won the title of "Little Plum Blossom", becoming the first teenager in Xizang to win the highest award for children's opera art in China. Tibetan opera people cheered together that year: "This is a great event that can be recorded in the memorabilia of Tibetan opera development and recorded in the history of Tibetan opera." It was also the same year that Gesang Jiancai won the "Little Plum Blossom" award for the first time and the Xizang children's group was awarded the "Little Plum Blossom Group Program". In addition, the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the Autonomous Region is making every effort to promote the digitalization project of the eight traditional Tibetan operas, which has contributed to the first Tibetan opera of children's stage, "Dunyue Dunzhu", in the occasion meeting. At that time, Yundeng Robb participated in various work as the guiding teacher for Gesangjiancai to compete for the "Little Plum Blossom" award. He said that through the Tibetan New Year's Eve party and other cultural performances, he discovered some young actors with a certain foundation in Tibetan opera. "After being planned and conceived by the leaders of the Autonomous Region Tibetan Opera Troupe, a bold idea was put on the agenda. Can we turn the traditional Eight Tibetan Operas' Dunyue Dunzhu 'into a children's stage play and launch it?" As the only excellent Tibetan opera play with a protagonist aged between 10 and 16 in the traditional Eight Tibetan Operas, it is feasible to bring' Dunyue Dunzhu 'on stage with the theme of a children's play. The Autonomous Region Tibetan Opera Troupe will launch this work at the end of 2022 and soon announce the recruitment of young actors through auditions. On the basis of preliminary research, the selection of young actors is mainly based on students from the regular amateur Tibetan opera singing class of the Autonomous Region Group Art Museum and the Duilong Youth Activity Center, and widely invites young people with Tibetan opera background in Lhasa or the whole region to participate. After screening more than 80 young actors who registered at that time, 25 young actors were ultimately selected, "said Yun Dengluo. Yundeng Robb, who participated in the entire work, still remembers the scene of the children's stage play "Dun Yue Dun Zhu" officially being performed by a group of young actors after two months of winter training from the end of 2022 to the beginning of 2023. He used the term 'very rough prototype' to describe the distance between the completed play and the ideal at that time. But no one gave up, whether it was the children, parents, or the autonomous region Tibetan opera troupe. In the following nearly 8 months, the Autonomous Region Tibetan Opera Troupe arranged teachers to teach Tibetan opera singing, music, and other subjects on weekends and holidays for relatively complete teaching and rehearsals, with each session lasting more than 6 hours. This process is very tiring Yun Dengluo admitted, "Children don't have weekends, so isn't our mentor?" "No one has done such a thing before." As the first children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu" was performed entirely by a group of non professional actors, Yun Dengluo said, "This is a bold and new attempt, and it is also a difficult process of drama grinding people and drama grinding people. During this period, we are growing slowly together with the children." During the 2023 Snow Festival, the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu" finally met the audience and won unanimous praise. Yun Dengluo remembers that after the first successful premiere, all the creators and mentors were so excited that they cried on site: "We did it!" "The Tree of Tibetan Opera", with branches and leaves sprouting new shoots. If we compare the art of Tibetan Opera, which originated in the 14th century and is based on folk stories, historical legends, etc., to an ancient and famous tree, then this ancient tree is now branching and sprouting new shoots. All the young actors who participated in the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu" are fresh sprouts on this ancient tree. Gesang Jiancai, who played the role of a drummer and cymbal in the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu", is currently studying in his first year of high school in Lhasa. Family upbringing combined with talent allowed him to receive multi-faceted guidance from multiple Tibetan opera experts and teachers since childhood. Despite having such a relatively "brilliant" background, Gesang Jiancai still feels that it is not easy to participate as a cymbal player in the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu". A good Tibetan opera drummer must first be a good Tibetan opera stage performer This is what Bandian Wangjiuchang, Gesang Jiancai's Tibetan opera instructor and the only winner of the "Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Drama" in Xizang, said to him. The drummers and cymbals of Tibetan opera are the soul of Tibetan opera Gesangjian, who grew up in a Tibetan opera courtyard since childhood, knows the meaning of this sentence all too well. He said that Tibetan opera drummers and cymbals must understand the overall trend and plot structure of a drama. The rehearsal time for this performance is short, and the length of the plot and the number of actors have increased compared to the premiere. Therefore, every time I perform, I am both excited and nervous. I have to strike different drum beats according to the appearance of different characters on stage, and every move performed by the actors must match the rhythm of the drums and cymbals. Once I hit the wrong drum, it will affect the rhythm on stage. Therefore, I am afraid of making mistakes and disrupting the performance of the whole play. "In the short four years since Gesangjian first picked the" Little Plum Blossom ", there have been 10 young actors in our district who have won the Chinese Children's Opera" Little Plum Blossom "award. Nowadays, in the performance of children's stage play "Dun Yue Dun Zhu", they play the leading role or supporting role. Each child is seriously treating what may be the "biggest" role they have received since their birth, while their parents give their children unconditional and all-round support. Two days before the performance of the children's stage play "Dunyue Dunzhu", Jiren Qunpei spent most of his time sitting in the theater audience with his parents watching rehearsals. Occasionally, he would also go outside the theater with other parents to chat about their children and daily life matters. Ciren Qunpei is a villager in Niangre Township, Chengguan District, Lhasa City. This time, his son Gesang Chili, who went to a vocational high school, and his daughter Zhaxi Thom, who went to a primary school, both played supporting role in the play. Therefore, Tsering Qunpei drives his two children from home to the Tibetan Opera Art Center for rehearsals early in the morning every day. After the children finish their rehearsals, they return home together in Niang Re Township. Because the rehearsal location is far away from home, sometimes after rehearsing for a long time, they return home around 2am. Hard work is hard work, but our family usually likes to watch Tibetan opera performances. Two children particularly like it. First, the son participated in Tibetan opera training and was infected by him. The daughter also wants to go, and they have been insisting on it for many years. They go on weekends without slacking off or complaining. We, as parents, must give our full support Jiren Qunpei returned to the theater to continue watching the children's rehearsals. He said, 'The children's performances are getting better and better.' Since the opening of the regular amateur Tibetan opera singing class at the Autonomous Region Mass Art Museum in 2015, the number of applicants has continued to increase every year for 10 consecutive years. Moreover, from the fact that adults were the main participants at the beginning, the number of children gradually increased. As one of the free and open regular training courses offered by the Autonomous Region Group Art Museum (District Intangible Cultural Heritage Center), the Tibetan Opera Singing Class is taught by two retired Tibetan opera experts, Basang and Zhongpuqiong, from the Autonomous Region Tibetan Opera Troupe. Over the years of teaching experience, these two Tibetan opera teachers were pleasantly surprised to discover that the group that used to enjoy Tibetan opera was older, but now it is becoming younger and younger. This gave hope to the two teachers and also made more Tibetan opera enthusiasts feel that this ancient art, which has been included in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List, is radiating new vitality. Danzeng Menglang, who plays the older brother Dunzhu, and Luo Sanglangjue, who plays the younger brother Dunyue, in the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu", are both students who have been taught by two Tibetan opera teachers, Basang and Zhongpuqiong, for many years. They have established deep relationships with the teachers and have also earned the nickname "Little Plum Blossom". When it comes to his mentor in Tibetan opera, Danzeng Menglang said, "I particularly admire Teacher Zhongpuqiong. He is a legend and a role model in my heart. I want to become someone like him." "Through drama, I aim to educate people." After the performance of the children's stage play "Dunyue Dunzhu" in Lhasa, the creative team and the crew members rushed to some counties (districts) in Shannan and Shigatse to start the tour mode of this play. Every time there is a performance, the local people's sincere and enthusiastic applause never stops. The scene of the audience bidding farewell to the children before the crew leaves is tear jerking. Yundeng Luobu said, "The children are getting better and better, and they are also loved by the masses." As an excellent reserved repertoire of the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the autonomous region "Educating People with Drama", the children's stage play "Dunyue Dunzhu" has built a dream stage for groups of Xizang teenagers who love Tibetan opera art since its early gestation. From May to June 2023, the children's stage play Tibetan opera "Dunyue Dunzhu" was exhibited at the 9th National Excellent Children's Drama Exhibition in Nanchong, Sichuan. Yun Dengluo and the creative team brought 14 children to participate at that time, with the oldest being 16 years old. After arriving there, they found that only the actors in Xizang were children, and the others were professional actors performing children's dramas. Children's drama is a very broad term, as long as the play is positioned as a children's theme He said that even the participating experts laughed and said that Xizang was a real children's play, full of children from beginning to end, and even the drummer was a child. Continuous effort and dedication have yielded fruitful returns. In 2024, the play was selected for the National Arts Foundation's annual large-scale stage play and work creation funding project. Dan Zengquda, who played the role of King Guo Xia in the children's stage play "Dunyue Dunzhu", is the oldest actor in the play
