The 41st Antarctic Expedition | China completes the Antarctic ice sheet detection experiment using its independently developed ultra wideband hyperspectral microwave radiometer

2025-03-13

On the 12th, it was learned from the 41st Antarctic Expedition Team of China that China's independently developed ultra wideband hyperspectral microwave radiometer has completed ice sheet detection experiments at Zhongshan Ice and Snow Airport in Antarctica. This is the first international joint experiment of ultra wideband hyperspectral microwave radiometer conducted in Antarctica. It is reported that in typical areas of ice sheets with different ice thicknesses and subsurface landforms, the expedition team used a combination of helicopter aviation experiments and snowmobile ice surface point measurement experiments, and used ultra wideband hyperspectral microwave radiometers to observe the internal radiation brightness temperature of ice sheets in typical areas of Antarctica, achieving remote sensing detection of temperature distribution under the Antarctic ice. Zhu Di, the chief scientist of the project and a researcher at the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet often starts from the bottom, but the traditional detection method of the subglacial temperature is costly and difficult. The equipment independently developed by our country can detect the weak microwave radiation energy from the interior of the Antarctic ice sheet, and obtain the temperature distribution from the ice surface to the bottom of the ice at a depth of 4000 meters. It can provide key data support for research on polar ice sheet melting, the development and evolution of subglacial lakes and water systems, and sea level changes, deepening the understanding of key issues such as the thermodynamic and dynamic evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet.
