Foshan is the capital of architectural ceramics in China, with over 280 ceramic production lines. They are not only the backbone of local economic development, but also the backbone of energy conservation and emission reduction. As one of the provincial laboratories, Foshan Xianhu Laboratory has achieved disruptive technological breakthroughs and built the world's first kiln line with "ammonia hydrogen zero carbon combustion" technology, bringing a "green upgrade package" to the ceramic industry. Hydrogen is an efficient fuel, and hydrogen fuel cells have been widely used in fields such as transportation and energy storage. The storage and transportation technology of liquid ammonia is relatively mature, and the transportation cost is low. It can be used as a medium for storing hydrogen and is also a relatively inexpensive zero carbon fuel. Taking the path of ammonia hydrogen fusion, or zero carbon combustion of pure hydrogen and pure ammonia, can meet the practical needs of Foshan ceramic industry for green and low-carbon development. Foshan Xianhu Laboratory started researching related technologies from 2022 and quickly organized pilot tests to produce the world's first qualified "zero carbon ceramic tile". After the successful pilot test, Foshan Xianhu Laboratory collaborated with ceramic enterprise Mona Lisa Group to build the world's first kiln line using "ammonia hydrogen zero carbon combustion" technology in September 2024, forming a successful demonstration of large-scale production. In the future, high-temperature industries such as metal processing and thermal power generation are also expected to use zero carbon combustion technology. This is a typical case of Guangdong Provincial Laboratory targeting the needs of local characteristic industries and serving economic and social development. Since 2017, in accordance with the overall requirements of "strategic urgent needs, domestic first-class, cross integration, distinctive characteristics, and supporting industries", Guangdong has launched the construction of 11 Guangdong Province laboratories around the fields of network communication, medicine and health, advanced manufacturing, etc., with the goal of enhancing basic research capabilities, strengthening the shortcomings of original innovation, and tackling core key technologies, benchmarking the best and highest standards at home and abroad. The Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory is backed by the advantages of advanced manufacturing industry, focusing on technological innovation and achievement transformation; The Bio Island Laboratory is rooted in the life and health industry, focusing on the "one equipment, two products" (high-end scientific instruments and high-end medical equipment, drugs, cosmetics), and promoting the localization and internationalization strategy of key core technologies in related fields... After years of construction, the laboratory system in Guangdong Province has basically taken shape, and high-end innovation resources continue to gather. A group of strategic scientists have been introduced as a team, and a number of large institutions, large central enterprises, and well-known universities have been introduced to participate in the construction on a large scale. A number of major scientific research achievements have been produced, which effectively support the development of 20 strategic industrial clusters in Guangdong Province, and inject strong scientific and technological momentum into the construction of a modern industrial system and the realization of high-quality development in Guangdong Province.
