According to multiple South Korean media outlets such as the Korean Ethnic Daily and Yonhap News Agency, on the 6th, a South Korean Air Force fighter jet mistakenly dropped a bomb on a residential area in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province during a joint exercise between South Korea and the United States, causing 15 injuries. The South Korean Air Force apologized for this incident on the same day. "I thought war had broken out," "I was too scared to go out," said a resident of Baochuan City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, recalling the scene when a bomb fell into a residential house on the morning of the 6th. On the morning of that day, South Korea and the United States conducted a joint air force and army shooting exercise at the Shengjin Training Ground in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province. Around 10 o'clock, two KF-16 fighter jets of the South Korean Air Force mistakenly dropped eight MK-82 bombs at the shooting range, and all of them exploded. It is reported that the bomb explosion occurred outside the designated exercise area, about 8 kilometers away from the shooting range. The cause of the accidental explosion was the pilot's "coordinate input error". As of the time of writing by our reporter, the accident resulted in 2 serious injuries and 13 minor injuries, including 2 foreign laborers and 2 military personnel. In addition, 5 residential buildings, 1 warehouse, 1 church, 1 plastic greenhouse, and 1 truck were damaged. The Korean Ethnic Daily reported that although the military and police have recovered the dropped bombs, residents still feel fearful. Yonhap News Agency stated that the number of injured individuals is likely to further increase. According to the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, the mayor of Baek Yong hyun, the scene of the accident was chaotic, like a battlefield. He demanded that the government "completely suspend military exercises" before formulating practical countermeasures to prevent such accidents from happening again and provide compensation. Yonhap News Agency reported that the South Korean military has established an accident response team to investigate and has decided to suspend all live fire exercises from the 6th until the accident investigation is completed. The South Korean Air Force apologized for the civilian injuries caused by the accident and stated that it will actively take all necessary measures such as compensation. South Korea's SBS television station stated that it is the first time that casualties have been caused by fighter jets accidentally bombing during the exercise. In 2004 and 2005, there were incidents of fighter jets accidentally bombing in Chungcheongnam do and Jeolla buk do, but no casualties were reported at the time. (New Society)
