China deploys to strengthen the protection of wild animals and plants such as birds

2025-02-24

The reporter learned from the fifth plenary session of the inter ministerial joint conference on cracking down on illegal trade in wildlife and plants organized by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration that China will continue to promote the "Clean Wind Action 2025" and the "Clear Mountain and Clear Cover Special Action" in the near future, and organize the Spring Bird Protection Special Action to severely crack down on illegal and criminal activities that damage wildlife and plant resources, and fully protect natural ecological security. In recent years, China has continuously increased its efforts to protect wild animals and plants. By 2024, the number of overwintering waterbirds in the country will reach the highest level of monitoring, and the overall population of key protected wild animals and plants in the wild is showing a stable and upward trend. However, there are many types of wild animals and plants in China, with a wide range of activities and distribution. In some places, the phenomenon of indiscriminate hunting, overhunting, and overfeeding of birds and other wild animals still occurs, threatening the safety of wild bird and other wild animal populations. The relevant person in charge of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration stated that the next step will focus on key areas, carry out special actions, and clearly include illegal hunting, illegal trading of birds, and the sale of prohibited hunting tools as key targets for crackdown. Provinces with concentrated bird distribution areas and high incidence of illegal cases will be divided into areas for protection, and guidance and supervision will be provided to all regions to effectively increase protection efforts. Accelerate the research and development of protective net standards that do not cause harm to birds and can effectively prevent losses, taking into account the requirements of bird protection and loss prevention. Consolidate the responsibilities of all parties and include the protection of birds and other wild animals and plants in the assessment of forest tenure in various regions. (New Society)
