Unleashing the Economic Potential of Outdoor Sports in Cities
2025-02-24
At present, China's outdoor sports have entered a golden period of development, with the outdoor sports industry accounting for nearly 60% of the sports industry and over 400 million participants. The construction of outdoor sports destinations has become another focus of promoting China's new urbanization process. Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission and the General Administration of Sport of China issued the "Guiding Opinions on Building High Quality Outdoor Sports Destination", which clearly stated that "by 2030, about 100 high-quality outdoor sports destinations should be built", further highlighting the strategic position of outdoor sports development and bringing important opportunities for destination cities to improve their development quality and establish a new image. Some cities can leverage the adaptive utilization of outdoor sports resources, flexible development of outdoor sports venues, and diversified construction of outdoor sports formats to continuously cultivate differentiated advantages and consolidate urban brand potential. The path of promoting urban image enhancement through outdoor sports resources includes advantages exploration, industrial value-added, ecological feedback, and brand premium. Specifically, the enhancement of urban image begins with the precise identification and development of its own endowments, and strengthens the functional value of the city through "sports+", promoting the transformation of industrial structure from traditional resource dependence to green economy dominance, and ultimately achieving brand reshaping through outdoor sports resources. The Northeast region has significant advantages in developing ice and snow sports. Guided by the concept of "ice and snow are also mountains of gold and silver", Harbin has built an 800000 square meter outdoor public welfare ice rink, which is currently the largest in Asia, with the most complete ice sports projects and pure sports elements, creating a "golden business card" of ice and snow culture for urban development. The southwestern region has rich altitude changes and abundant precipitation. Liupanshui in Guizhou has deeply exploited the unique climate and geographical advantages of "cool summers and snowy winters" to create a high-quality tourist city destination of "outdoor+cultural tourism", achieving a successful transformation from the "coal capital of Jiangnan" to the "cool capital of China". Under the nourishment of the quality of "green mountains and clear waters", outdoor sports are deeply combined with local endowments, adding personalized temperament and labels to the city's image. From this, it can be seen that fully activating and utilizing outdoor sports resources in a tailored manner, nourishing urban quality with "green mountains and clear waters", is an important way to promote urban construction. The construction of venue facilities is the hardware foundation for the development of outdoor sports, an important way to enhance urban public service capabilities, and a strategic engine driving the multidimensional development of urban economy, culture, and ecology. In the traditional urbanization perspective, landmark buildings and economies of scale often play a leading role. With the flourishing development of outdoor sports, the value and importance of developing "golden corners and silver edges" spaces in cities with relatively dispersed locations and functions are increasing day by day. By scientifically planning outdoor resources such as mountains, water bodies, and airspace, not only can idle urban spaces and potential endowments be activated, but also new sustainable development momentum can be injected into cities through the gathering of people, the integration of industries, and the shaping of brands, forming a development loop from the construction of outdoor sports facilities, to the extension of the sports industry chain, and to the improvement of urban comprehensive competitiveness. From the "thick planting" sports function of Qingdao Qilu Sports Park and Taipingjiao Park, to the "transformation" of the natural mudflat near Chongqing Fisherman's Bay wharf, including the N37 Qiaojiao Nightlight Camp, a cycling path, a trendy playground, a parent-child playground, to the online celebrity sports clocking ground "growing" under the overpasses in Changsha, Xi'an and other cities, the construction of outdoor sports ground facilities has become an important force to support the city to change its appearance, increase its vitality and increase its momentum through the development and utilization of the "Golden Horn and Silver Edge". In the process of promoting urban development through outdoor sports and shaping a new image of the city, the diversification and enrichment of product and service formats are the key to supporting the healthy development of the national outdoor market. Nowadays, the traditional outdoor industry's uniform "equipment purchase+venue use" model is being deconstructed and redefined by emerging market activities. Outdoor enthusiasts are no longer satisfied with the single sports function of their destination, but are more inclined to pursue a comprehensive experience of deep participation in outdoor sports. In the face of demand changes, urban development can anchor the supply of products and services that match its comparative advantages, and leverage the "long board effect" through differentiated competition and cooperation to achieve a new urban ecology where flowers bloom and beauty coexist. Chengdu Luke Island combines surfing, rowing, skiing, camping, animal farms, art markets, etc., and cultivates a model of urban sports and tourism service complex through the "outdoor+commercial exhibition" model, contributing the strength of the outdoor industry to Chengdu's efforts to build a "world-class sports city" and strengthen the chain. The innovative transformation of outdoor sports products and services enables destination cities to establish different ecological niches in the outdoor industry chain, thereby showcasing their differentiated image and unique appeal.
