How is Shakespeare's "King Lear" grafted onto Gan opera presented? The seminar on artistic innovation of Gan Opera "Li Erwang" (Beijing) was held at the China Academy of Arts on the 18th. The Gan Opera "Li Erwang" was created and performed by the Gan Opera Troupe of Leping City, Jiangxi Province. It is adapted from Shakespeare's famous tragedy "King Lear" and continues the excellent tradition of Chinese opera adapting foreign dramas. At the same time, it combines the artistic requirements of the Gan Opera itself and the aesthetic demands of the opera ecology in northeastern Jiangxi for opera art, and boldly transforms it into a localized and theatrical form, forming Leping Gan Opera's re creation of Western classics. The play had previously premiered in Leping City, Jiangxi Province. The director of the drama, Wang Xiufan, introduced that in order to perfectly present the story of "King Lear" in the form of Gan opera, the creative team conducted in-depth research on the original work, repeatedly polished the script, and cleverly integrated the unique singing style, performance form, and regional cultural characteristics of Gan opera while retaining the spiritual core of the original work, making Western classic stories wear the "coat of Gan opera". The attending experts expressed their opinions on the creation and performance of the Gan opera "Li Erwang" from multiple perspectives such as script adaptation, music creation, and stage performance. Experts generally believe that in the favorable ecological space of traditional Chinese opera in northeastern Jiangxi, the creation and arrangement of the Gan Opera "Li Erwang" demonstrates the "great energy of small theater troupes". The grassroots theater troupe of Leping Gan Opera, based on its long-term roots in the grassroots and close to the audience's aesthetic, dares to adapt and perform world-renowned plays, demonstrating the leading role of this grassroots theater troupe through its works. Experts believe that adaptation is a form of re creation. The adaptation of "King Lear" by Gan Opera shows outstanding artistic changes from script adaptation to stage presentation. Its thematic content conforms to the psychological demands of Chinese audiences for family and filial piety, and the script adaptation and deletion are appropriate. It is a localized artistic innovation based on the preservation of the original spiritual core and narrative framework, and a beneficial attempt for creative transformation and innovative development. At the same time, the drama has a complete range of performances, gathering the rich artistic skills of actors, actresses, and ugliness, vividly showcasing the personality and traditional aesthetics of Gan opera. It not only allows Chinese audiences to learn more about foreign classic plays and innovatively activates the vitality of excellent traditional Chinese culture, but also provides an opportunity for the outside world to understand Gan opera art from a cross-cultural and cross-border perspective, promoting cultural and artistic exchanges and mutual learning between China and the West. Experts also conducted a detailed analysis of the musical singing style, character development, and storyline of the drama, and provided insightful suggestions. They hope that the creative team can further refine and improve the drama, in order to make it go beyond Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, and the world. Zhou Qingfu, President of the China Academy of Art, stated that the academy will strengthen cooperation with local cultural and artistic institutions based on its academic traditions and cultural positioning, effectively connecting its academic advantages with local cultural and artistic creation, protection, research, promotion, and other work. Ke Fan, Deputy Director of the Drama and Quyi Department of the Art Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, pointed out that the creation and performance of traditional Chinese opera plays is the core link for the contemporary inheritance and development of ancient Chinese opera. The Art Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has always adhered to the "three pronged" policy of drama plays, supported various types of drama plays, and guided and promoted the flourishing of drama art. Han Zhiyu, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jiangxi Province, fully affirmed the solid practice of the Leping City Gan Opera Troupe in the protection and inheritance of traditional Gan Opera and the innovative development of its works. This has a good promoting effect on consolidating the artistic and cultural foundation of Gan Opera, and promoting it to further demonstrate its people-oriented, contemporary, and artistic qualities. The seminar is jointly organized by the China Academy of Arts, Jiangxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Jiangxi Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Jingdezhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China.
