On December 23, 2024, the Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Science Literature Publishing House jointly released the "Blue Book of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area: Report on the Construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area (2024)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") at the Guangdong Social Science Center. The report points out that by the end of 2023, the economic scale of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has far exceeded the $1.8 trillion of the New York Bay Area and the $1.38 trillion of the San Francisco Bay Area, and is on par with the Tokyo Bay Area, ranking among the top tier of global bay areas. The main creator of the report, Wan Lu, director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Research Center of Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, introduced a series of research findings. He introduced that since the promulgation of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area more than five years ago, various construction projects such as science and technology, economy, society, people's livelihood, culture, ecology, etc. within the Greater Bay Area have progressed simultaneously, and the total economic output has reached the top tier of the global Bay Area. The framework of a world-class urban agglomeration has basically taken shape. The report consists of one overall report, 17 research reports with seven thematic chapters, two case study reports, and one major event summary. It provides a systematic and comprehensive summary of the achievements in the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area over the past five years from various aspects such as the construction of world-class urban agglomerations and international first-class bay areas, the construction of international science and technology innovation centers, the construction of modern industrial systems, the construction of high-quality living circles, high-level opening up, and major cooperation platforms. It analyzes the strategic opportunities and risk challenges faced by the construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in the next stage, and puts forward targeted policy recommendations.
