The 41st Antarctic Expedition: Where did the "Water of Life" at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica come from

Water is one of the essential elements for survival. Where did the water that the team members drank come from at Zhongshan Station? On the southwest highland of Zhongshan Station area, a green hemispherical building can be seen from afar on the ice surface. The team members only found out as they approached that the Water of Life at Zhongshan Station was beneath this ice surface. Zhang Genzhen, a member of the wintering team at Zhongshan Station of the 40th Antarctic Expedition Team of China: There is a freshwater lake in front of us, which is equivalent to the melting of snow water, forming a freshwater lake that exists all year round. On the surface, it is frozen, but not at the bottom. This is called Mochou Lake. The water used for standing comes from this lake. Although Antarctica is covered by huge ice sheets, the freshwater resources that make up these ice sheets account for over 70% of the Earth's freshwater resources. But in Antarctica, it is difficult to utilize these freshwater resources. At present, there are nearly 40 annual scientific research stations from about 20 countries distributed throughout the Antarctic continent, as well as summer dedicated scientific research stations for operation and maintenance. But not every station has a suitable freshwater lake, and some require seawater desalination to obtain water. At Zhongshan Station, with Mochou Lake, the team members really don't have to worry anymore. Even in winter, the water at the bottom of the lake will not freeze. The temperature inside the pump room in the center of the lake remains around 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. In order to understand the situation of freshwater under the ice, the team members also regularly measure the ice thickness, water level, and water quality. The water from Mochou Lake is pumped up from the pump room, and through these pipelines, it extends all the way to the power generation building. These pipelines are not only equipped with insulation layers, but also with electric heating to ensure that water will not freeze. In the power building, there is not only a water treatment room, but also a boiler room, so that the water from Mochou Lake can be heat exchanged here and supplied to the wintering building and kitchen, etc. The water from the faucet is warm. Zhang Dong, the leader of the power generation team of the Zhongshan Station wintering team of the 40th Antarctic Expedition of China: We are like a small town. Although sparrows are small, they have all the necessary organs. (New Society)
