Previous studies have shown that cardiovascular health is associated with cognitive decline and dementia. Recently, a study published by Xu Weili and others from the School of Public Health at Tianjin Medical University found that people with lower scores in cardiovascular health indicators (the Eight Elements of Life) have a larger brain age (brain age) and a greater difference in brain age (the difference between predicted brain age and actual age), even among middle-aged people. The study asked all participants to undergo brain magnetic resonance imaging approximately 9 years after joining the project, and evaluate their brain structure and function using 1079 indicators from 6 neuroimaging modes to simulate brain age. Next, the researchers modeled 4355 healthy participants to calculate the brain age and brain age difference of the entire population. Analysis shows that people with higher scores have smaller brain age and a larger negative difference in brain age (i.e., brain age is smaller than actual age). Compared with people with high cardiovascular health scores, those with low or moderate cardiovascular health scores have a larger brain age and an increased brain age difference. The association between low cardiovascular health scores and large differences in brain age and brain age is significant and similar in both middle-aged and elderly individuals. The research results indicate that optimizing cardiovascular health can promote brain health. The eight elements of life include: not smoking, not being overweight or obese, regular exercise, healthy diet, normal blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood sugar, and healthy sleep.
