A big article on reducing losses through active grain processing

2024-12-19

As the saying goes, grains are essential for nourishment. Grain is an important source of food, as well as an important feed and industrial raw material. In the process of grain transformation, grain processing is at the core of the entire industry chain. In recent years, there have been problems such as excessive processing, insufficient deep processing, and low utilization of processing by-products in China's grain processing industry, resulting in serious waste of resources. To reduce losses in the processing stage, we should guide moderate grain processing, promote the action of reducing and replacing feed grains, promote the transformation of primary grain processing to deep processing, and promote the efficient utilization of resources and the resource utilization of processing by-products. For some time now, there has been a consumer misconception in society that excessively pursues "refined rice and white flour". To meet this demand, grain processing enterprises have excessively developed precision processing, removing almost all of the grain epidermis, cortex, and germ, leaving only the endosperm, resulting in a decrease in grain yield and nutrient loss. Nowadays, with the improvement of living standards, grain consumption has accelerated from "eating enough" to a new stage of "eating well" and "eating nutritious and healthy", and the consumption of whole grains has significantly increased. We should reasonably determine indicators such as grain processing accuracy based on changes in market consumer demand, promote the standardization of moderate grain and oil processing, promote the application of processes such as mild grinding and high-precision screening, promote equipment such as low-temperature rice milling and flexible rice milling, improve the yield of finished grain products, and achieve the organic unity of food security and nutritional security. Shortage of feed grains is a major issue facing China's future food security. China has achieved the goal of basic self-sufficiency in grains and absolute food security, but the tight balance between supply and demand of corn has not changed, and the dependence on soybeans is still high. Taking soybeans as an example, China's annual soybean imports are large and the sources of imports are highly concentrated, which can easily be "choked" and pose significant risks to the stable production and supply of meat, eggs, and milk. Promoting the reduction and substitution of feed grains is an important measure to maintain national food security. In recent years, China has deeply implemented the action of reducing and replacing feed soybean meal, using new protein materials such as rapeseed meal, cotton meal, corn protein powder, microbial protein, insect protein, etc. to replace soybean meal, achieving phased results. Deeply promoting the reduction and substitution of feed grains, fully tapping into alternative resources such as miscellaneous grains, meal, and by-products of grain processing, can effectively alleviate the problem of insufficient feed grains and achieve the organic unity of food security and industrial security. The low added value of grain is an important reason that affects the enthusiasm of farmers to grow grain and the main production areas to seize grain. Grain is an important industrial raw material. It can not only process white rice, Rice noodles, wheat flour, corn flour and other primary products, but also use the processing by-products to develop high value-added products such as rice oil, germ oil, protein feed, functional food, dietary fiber and so on. From the current situation in China, some companies process rice into more than 20 products, some companies process wheat into more than 600 products, and some companies process soybeans into deep processed products such as soy protein, soy phospholipids, and protein drinks, extending into the pharmaceutical field and turning soybeans into "golden beans". The corn industry chain is longer and has great development potential. We should promote the transformation and upgrading of grain from primary processing to deep processing, strengthen the resource utilization of grain and oil processing by-products such as rice bran, bran, and germ, and achieve the organic unity of grain production and economic benefits. The big article of reducing losses through active grain processing requires strengthening technological empowerment and increasing the promotion of scientific research and development. Only by tapping into the development potential of the grain processing industry can we provide stronger guarantees for food security. (New Society)
