Xinjiang seafood 'travels' to thousands of households

Saline alkali water belongs to non marine saline water resources, which are widely present in nature and cannot be consumed by humans or livestock. It cannot be directly used for agricultural irrigation and is mostly in an undeveloped state around the world. China has nearly 1.5 billion acres of saline alkali land, covering 19 provinces. These saline alkali lands contain abundant saline alkali water, mainly including different types of saline alkali water such as Northeast inland carbonate type, North China coastal composite type, Eastern salt coated chloride type, Northwest inland sulfate type, etc., most of which have not been effectively developed and utilized. As a researcher engaged in aquaculture, I have always been very concerned about the research work on the development and utilization of saline alkali water. In recent years, China has achieved remarkable results in the development of saline alkali land. Some saline alkali land has been improved to grow crops such as cotton and salt tolerant rice, which has played a significant role in expanding the area of grain cultivation. However, the abundant saline alkali water beneath the saline alkali land has not been fully utilized. If we develop aquaculture in saline alkali land and use this saline alkali water to cultivate "seafood", it is of great significance for effectively utilizing land resources and ensuring China's food security. Aquaculture is an applied profession that requires frequent visits to the base to understand the situation of aquaculture and conduct experimental work. I have been serving as a special envoy for science and technology in Zhejiang Province since 2005, providing scientific and technological assistance to many parts of the province. In 2023, the Zhejiang Provincial Aid Xinjiang Command will extend the system of science and technology envoys to aid Xinjiang work. I became one of the first batch of science and technology envoys in Zhejiang Province, mainly responsible for providing technical guidance and services related to aquaculture in Alar City, the first division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Xinjiang's saline alkali land accounts for nearly one-third of the country's total, and the prospects for underground saline alkali water conservancy are vast. According to our sampling survey and analysis, the salinity of underground saline alkali water in the Alar city area is generally between 8 ‰ and 12 ‰. The saline alkali water with such salinity is regulated by the "seawater like" technology, which is suitable for many mid to high end marine aquaculture species, such as South American white shrimp, marine grouper, etc. In May of this year, our team conducted a trial breeding of over 2000 pearl gentian groupers with our partner companies. In October, the first batch of mid to high end "Xinjiang seafood" from the breeding base was freshly launched. The success of the pilot has greatly boosted our confidence. In the future, we will continue to strengthen research, further improve the scientific utilization level of saline alkali water, and drive more aquaculture enterprises or farms (households) to carry out saline alkali water aquaculture, improve the economic benefits of aquaculture, and enable Xinjiang seafood to "swim" to thousands of households. We believe that through the continuous efforts of researchers, enterprises, governments and other parties, fully tapping into the advantages of Xinjiang's saline alkali water resources, Xinjiang can be developed into an important seafood breeding base in China, and the saline alkali desert can be turned into a place for increasing income and wealth.
