The Red Modern Huai Bang Opera "Yang Jieren" tells the story of the revolutionary martyr Yang Jieren. Yang Jie was born in Qinyang, Henan Province and was one of the first group of work study students from Henan Province to study abroad in France. During the first domestic revolutionary war, he organized peasant armed forces, resisted warlords, welcomed the Northern Expeditionary Army, and made important contributions to the revolutionary cause. In 1936, Yang Jieren was killed by the reactionary Kuomintang in Baoding Prison. The drama starts with Yang Jieren's return to China after studying in Moscow to join the revolution, vividly depicting his glorious life of leading workers' strikes, establishing trade unions, setting up night schools for farmers, propagating revolutionary principles, forming peasant armed forces, and ultimately sacrificing himself heroically. As a main melody drama work, the play did not deliberately elevate the image of Yang Jieren, but integrated his personal growth into the current of the Chinese revolution, depicting his pursuit and exploration, practice and reflection on the Chinese revolution, as well as his steadfastness and persistence, successfully shaping a vivid and three-dimensional revolutionary image. The drama portrays his arduous struggle against reactionary forces. Capitalists use gold bars to corrupt him, special agents use camaraderie to win him over, and even reactionaries use his young son as a threat to force him to return to work; The enemy also captured his mother and wife in an attempt to destroy his revolutionary will... However, none of this could shake Yang Jieren's revolutionary stance. The more cunning and treacherous the reactionaries are, the more firm their stance becomes; The more ruthless the reactionaries are, the higher their fighting spirit becomes. A Communist Party member's revolutionary spirit of 'wealth and status cannot be indulged, poverty and base cannot be moved, and power cannot be subdued' can be fully demonstrated on stage. The climax of the play is the meeting of Yang Jieren with his mother and wife in prison. The enemy originally intended to use his mother and wife to persuade him to surrender, but their high integrity further strengthened his revolutionary belief of sacrificing his life for righteousness. In the face of death, Yang Jieren remained righteous and treated death as his own. However, in front of his mother and wife, he deeply felt guilty for not being able to show filial piety to his mother and take care of his wife and children. At the moment of separation, he entrusted his mother to send his body back to his hometown after his death. He said he didn't see the liberation of his hometown when he was alive, and he must see the victory of the people after death. At the end of the play, his mother and wife transported his coffin back to their homeland on a wooden cart, with two delicate women escorting their loved ones. The scene was solemn, tragic, and deeply moving. As a national intangible cultural heritage project, Huaibang not only has a long history of inheritance, but also has distinct regional characteristics. Last year, 'Yang Jieren' participated in the Tsinghua University Campus Art Festival in Beijing and received unanimous praise from young students. Recently, the drama made another remarkable appearance at the Henan Provincial Drama Exhibition. Yang Jieren shows us that revolutionary themes and ancient theatrical genres can complement each other on stage and shine brilliantly. (New Society)
