Chinese Eye Discovers Over 1000 New Pulsars

Reporters learned from the "FAST Pulsar Science Seminar" held by the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 26th that as of November 2024, the number of pulsars discovered by FAST, the "Chinese Celestial Eye", has exceeded 1000, which is more than the total number of pulsars discovered by other international telescopes in the same period, including a large number of millisecond pulsars and pulsar binaries, enriching the types and number of pulsars, and is of great significance for understanding the formation and evolution of pulsars. Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars, named after their constant emission of electromagnetic pulse signals. It is one of the densest celestial bodies, with extremely high density, strong magnetic field, and strong gravity, and is widely recognized as a "superstar" in physics and astronomy. Since British researchers discovered the first pulsar in 1967, foreign researchers have discovered about 3000 pulsars. Pulsars are natural laboratories for studying the four major interactions and physical laws under extreme conditions. Since 2020, our team has been conducting pulsar surveys of the disk regions of the Milky Way, and the newly discovered faint pulsars have become key evidence for revealing the faint pulsar population in the Milky Way; At the same time, the millisecond pulsar and pulsar binary discovered by our team provide core data for understanding the currently inconclusive evolutionary pathways of binary stars, including excellent probes for monitoring gravitational waves Han Jinlin, a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. Zhu Weiwei stated that FAST will explore ways to enhance the sensitivity and spatial resolution of the telescope by adding auxiliary antennas around it in the future; At the same time, the leap forward capability of radio transient source localization and comprehensive aperture imaging will be achieved to increase the coverage of FAST's scientific capabilities in the sky.
