China's new generation ground-based infrared astronomical telescope releases first batch of images

2024-11-26

On November 23rd, the reporter learned from the Management Committee of Qinghai Lenghu Science and Technology Innovation Industrial Park that the 80 centimeter telescope of Sun Yat sen University was recently put into observation at the Qinghai Lenghu Astronomical Observation and Research Base, and successfully released the first batch of observation images. The reporter learned that the telescope has become the new generation of ground-based infrared astronomical telescopes in China, and for the first time, a domestically produced detector has been used to achieve scientific level imaging observations in the K-band. Previously, in response to China's shortcomings in the field of infrared astronomical observation, the School of Physics and Astronomy at Sun Yat sen University proposed the 80 centimeter infrared telescope project, which was officially approved in November 2022. In 2023, the project team will collaborate with domestic units to develop telescopes and terminal cameras. Ma Bin, the technical leader of the telescope project and associate professor at Sun Yat sen University, introduced that the scientific mission of the 80 centimeter telescope at Sun Yat sen University is to capture the dynamic changes of celestial bodies in the infrared band as the core. After the discovery of temporary sources by X-ray and gamma ray satellites in space and optical survey telescopes on the ground, the telescope can quickly point at the target for observation in the infrared band. The telescope has observed the supernova SN2024xal. During the continuous monitoring process, the team observed a significant decrease in its luminosity. Based on this, the team will obtain complete light variation data in the near-infrared band, which will help to conduct multi band photometric data analysis on the supernova SN2024xal. The 80 centimeter telescope at Sun Yat sen University will collaborate with telescopes in the optical, radio, and high-energy bands in China to observe and reveal the mysteries of the deep universe Ma Bin introduced that previously, the previous generation of infrared telescopes in China used photomultiplier tube detectors, which could not directly image; The 80 centimeter telescope at Sun Yat sen University uses domestically produced detectors to achieve scientific level imaging observations in the infrared K-band, greatly improving observation efficiency. Relying on unique and irreplaceable astronomical observation resources, Qinghai Province has extensively collaborated with major domestic research institutions and universities to comprehensively promote the construction of a world-class astronomical observation and research base in Lenghu, gathering high-level astronomical scientific research forces and making significant progress. The overall layout of the base plan includes 28 observation points, of which 3 points have the site conditions for setting up large and ultra large telescopes of 30 meters or more, 19 observation points meet the site conditions for setting up 10 meter level telescopes, and a maximum of 27 10 meter level telescope projects can be set up. There are also 2 observation points that have the conditions for developing into science popularization observation platforms. At present, more than 10 scientific research institutions and research teams, including the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Zijinshan Observatory, the Institute of Geophysics and Geophysics, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the University of Science and Technology of China, have settled in the Cold Lake Base.
