Thirty years, from network access to clean network

2024-11-22

On November 20, the 2024 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit opened in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. For a while, "Internet" has become a hot topic on the Internet. This year marks the 11th year of the Wuzhen Summit, the 10th anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping's strategic goal of building a strong cyber nation, and the 30th anniversary of China's full access to the international internet. In April 1994, with the opening of a 64K international special line, China realized full functional connection with the Internet and became the 77th member of the Internet family. Perhaps many netizens still remember that we, who are new to the Internet family, use "cats" for dial-up surfing, OICQ for chatting, and forum for topic discussion... Every close contact with the Internet is exciting. Over the past 30 years, the Internet has been "flying into the homes of ordinary people", and it has achieved remarkable achievements in the past decade. According to statistics, as of May 2023, China has built a total of 2.844 million 5G base stations and over 2.05 billion mobile IoT terminal users. At present, China's existing administrative villages have achieved "broadband access to every village", and 5G networks cover all urban areas of prefecture level cities and county towns. The Internet in China has developed from dial-up access to real-time sharing, from micro applications of several or dozens of people to a huge platform with hundreds of millions of users. Every Internet user, just like a beating byte, converges into a vivid picture of the development of China's Internet. In 1999, most contestants encountered difficulties in a "72 hour network survival test" that could only rely on computers to communicate with the outside world. But today, it is more difficult to leave the Internet for 72 hours. From online shopping to intelligent travel, from smart medical care to digital government, from cloud services to AI education, the Internet has penetrated into all aspects of life. At this Wuzhen Summit, the unmanned vehicles, robot dogs, unmanned boats, unmanned aerial vehicles, etc. that serve security and organizational work, none of them can play a role without the Internet. The Internet has not only reshaped everyone's lifestyle, but also transformed the traditional way of work, spawned new business types and scenarios, and has become the core driving force of national competition and an important support for social development. After 30 years of access to the Internet, the Internet has become a common home for netizens from a place of virtual surfing, which is a novelty for a while. At present, there are nearly 1.1 billion Internet users in China. Such a large number of people live together in the Internet home, and inevitably encounter problems and challenges. In recent years, chaos such as privacy breaches, big data murder, digital scams, and spam messages have repeatedly occurred. The digital divide and ethical issues brought about by the development of new technologies such as AI are constantly increasing, causing personal and property losses to ordinary netizens, as well as going against the value orientation of technology towards goodness. At the age of thirty, the more China's Internet develops, the better the steering wheel should be. In recent years, regulatory documents such as the Regulations on the Administration of Internet News and Information Services have been issued in succession. The process of legalization of cyberspace has been further promoted. The regulatory authorities have continued to carry out the special action of "clearing up" and constantly purify the spiritual home of the Internet. A safe and clean cyberspace can enable the public to enjoy the maximum efficiency of the Internet and have more sense of gain in sharing the achievements of Internet development. Strolling through the green mountains, people are still young, and after thirty years, the 'Netscape' here is unique. In the future, China's Internet will march forward bravely and our Internet home will be more beautiful. (New Society)
