One thing in a lifetime, the revival of the elderly and the continuation of classic music

Dou Gu, Peng Gu, Yu Ban, Shuangxing, Pu Bo, Jiao Luo... A Xinchang Ten Opera performance team with an average age of 72 often carries classical instruments and is active on various stages in Xinchang County, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. They perform ancient songs with melodious melodies. Xinchang Shifan has a history of nearly 200 years in the local area, originally belonging to the court music, and is a provincial-level intangible cultural heritage in Zhejiang Province. As a representative inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage project, 82 year old Shi Julin has adhered to his original intention and has been doing so for over 60 years, inheriting classics through practical actions. Shi Julin was born into a ten fan family in Huangtan Village, Wozhou Lake, Xinchang County. His ancestors have been dedicated to ten fan performances for four generations. At the age of 14, he learned Dongxiao from his uncle and erhu, harmonica, etc. from his father. In high school, thanks to her homeroom teacher being a music teacher, Shi Julin systematically learned music theory knowledge. Until 1960, Shi Julin officially joined the local Huangtan Tenth Class as a three stringed musician and rewrote the gongchi score into a simplified score for training. At that time, the village established rural cultural clubs, art propaganda teams, etc., and he took on important responsibilities. In order to inherit the Ten Banners, Shi Julin also self-taught electronic notation techniques, changed his drafts several times, and successfully revised the overall and sub scores of the "Xinchang Ten Banners". Inheriting ten generations is not an easy task. Around 1972, due to the construction of the Xinchang County Magistrate's Decree Reservoir and the initiation of immigration projects in the reservoir area, members of the Tenth Division were scattered in all directions, many old artists passed away, and ancient songs were on the brink of extinction. This is the cultural heritage of our village, it must not be lost During the interview, Shi Julin recalled her feelings at that time. After the 21st century, Shi Julin personally invested and contributed to the purchase and production of musical instruments and props, and recruited apprentices widely. According to its introduction, at that time, eight veteran artists and their descendants who were still alive were mobilized to establish a ten fold performance team composed of old, middle-aged, and young performers. When I formed the team, everyone's children also participated unconditionally. Everyone thinks that inheritance is an unshirkable responsibility In order to improve traditional skills, Shi Julin also opened the door to welcome guests and turned his home into a regular practice place. At the same time, he actively organized performances in county parks, communities, and rural stages, making the audience of Shifan more and more diverse. In order to make Shifan more visible to more people, Shi Julin also took the initiative to renovate rural office buildings and established the first "Xinchang Shifan" exhibition hall in Xinchang County, showcasing a large number of Shifan related physical and audio-visual materials; By writing papers such as "Ecological Status and Protection of Xinchang Shifan" and "Brief Explanation of Xinchang Shifan Performance Techniques", we aim to expand the dimensions of intangible cultural heritage inheritance. I hope to pass on the information accumulated over the years to the next generation, which can also be considered a valuable asset left for future generations Shi Julin said. Through the joint efforts of veteran artists and the support of the local government, Xinchang Shifan was selected as one of the fifth batch of representative projects of intangible cultural heritage in Zhejiang Province in 2016, and received certain policy funding support and more opportunities for overseas exchanges. The increasingly broad stage allows ancient folk art to constantly shine. In addition to forming a team and conducting basic research, the revival of ancient music is also crucial. Over the years, Shi Julin and his team members have jointly arranged new programs popular with the masses, such as "Celebrate the Spring Festival", "Turn over the Taoist Priest" and "Celebrate the Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice-flour for Lantern Festival)", and encouraged more than 50 people to participate in them. The ancient song 'Embroidered Ball' has been lost for nearly 50 years and has always been a regret in Shi Julin's heart. It is reported that the ancient song "Embroidered Ball" has distinct levels of high, medium, and low voices, and was often used in traditional temple fairs and folk festivals. It is a rare ensemble of wind and percussion music in eastern Zhejiang. In order to revive ancient music, in recent years, Shi Julin and his teammates have continuously visited living veteran artists, studied and preserved performance video materials, collected multiple scores of "Hydrangea", and created new scores. In 2023, the Xinchang National Cultural Competition will begin, and Shi Julin and his team members will work together to bring the ancient song "Hydrangea" back to the stage through multiple exercises and collaborations. Not only that, during the second Zhejiang Traditional Music and Opera Music New Creation Exhibition of "Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance" in 2024, after layers of selection, Xinchang Shifan stood out with the ancient song "Embroidered Ball". Not long ago, the Xinchang Tenth Performance Team went to Ningbo to participate in the exhibition and won the Excellent Exhibition Award. The tenth round of Xinchang's "revival" also gave Shi Julin great encouragement. I am full of confidence and I also want to restore other ancient songs Although he is already in his eighties, Shi Julin is still full of energy and often participates in and guides young team members in performing traditional Chinese opera. For a lifetime, one thing. Shi Julin candidly stated that he is currently most concerned about the successor of Xinchang Shifan. "I sincerely hope that young people who have a sense of responsibility and love Shifan will pass on the splendid intangible cultural heritage well," (Xin She)
