Industry insiders are optimistic about the prospects of green shipping in Hong Kong as part of the decarbonization transformation of the shipping industry

In response to the 2050 net zero emissions target proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), governments, industries, academia, non-governmental organizations, energy suppliers, and others need to accelerate the exploration of technical solutions and work together in the same direction, "said Bader Dahl, Global Executive Vice President of Maritime Policy and Government Affairs at Mediterranean Shipping Group. The 4th World Airline Congress will be held in Hong Kong from the 18th to the 19th. At the meeting, Bader Dahl's views resonated widely with the attendees. Compared to previous years, this conference has added a bit more urgency when it comes to decarbonization. Data shows that greenhouse gas emissions caused by international shipping account for approximately 3% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions. Replacing traditional fuel with cost-effective low-carbon energy is the key to decarbonizing the shipping industry. At the meeting, industry insiders from various countries expressed to varying degrees that the use of low-carbon fuels will lead to a significant increase in costs for shipping companies, directly affecting the competitiveness of the shipping industry. But with the deepening of the concept of green development, the decarbonization transformation of the shipping industry is imperative. Emmanuel Grimaldi, President of the International Chamber of Shipping, stated that the shipping industry needs to further consolidate consensus, establish and improve an economic mechanism for long-term investment in low-carbon and zero carbon technologies, and promote the research and utilization of high-efficiency alternative fuels. The urgent task is to form a consensus in the shipping industry on green fuels and decarbonization, provide feasible solutions technically, strengthen supervision and regulation in policies, and continue to provide support for decarbonization actions Kapil Seli, Executive Director of Sheraf Group in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, who participated in the airline business conference for the first time, told reporters. For Hong Kong's shipping industry, which accounts for nearly 90% of its foreign trade volume, achieving emissions reduction and carbon reduction is currently a major challenge. I have full confidence in the prospects of promoting green shipping and green ports in Hong Kong Liu Yang, a member of the Hong Kong Maritime Ports Authority and Chief Representative of the China Office of the International Chamber of Shipping, believes that the SAR government has recently revised the relevant laws on the use of ship fuel, allowing ships to safely use and refuel low-carbon or even zero carbon green fuels, laying a legal foundation for the development of Hong Kong as a regional green ship fuel refueling center, and demonstrating strong determination and action in promoting green shipping and green port development. Kapil Serly's company has partnerships with multiple shipping companies in mainland China, and he is optimistic about the prospects of Hong Kong building a green marine fuel refueling center. He believes that Hong Kong has an open financial and trade environment, and significant advantages in professional services such as law, which can accelerate the financing and promotion of green and intelligent technologies. Meanwhile, through the developed transportation and logistics network in mainland China, multimodal transport can be developed to further reduce carbon emissions. Nicholas Bornoz, President of Capital Link, a US based company specializing in shipping financing and investor relations services, has noticed that the Hong Kong SAR government has introduced a new round of policies and plans to enhance Hong Kong's positioning as a green shipping center. He believes that Hong Kong already possesses many key elements of a maritime cluster and hopes that it can become an ideal platform for gathering global wisdom and accelerating the greening of shipping. Zhao Shiqing, Chairman of the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce and Executive Chairman of Huaguang Shipping, believes that in the future, the shipping industry's requirements for clean fuels and carbon reduction related technologies will continue to increase, and Hong Kong will face unlimited development opportunities in the green energy market.
