Illegal Outland for Online Treasure Appraisal

2024-11-20

Recently, the National Cutural Heritage Administration and the Central Cyberspace Office launched a special campaign to crack down on illegal short video and live broadcast activities such as tomb robbing, tomb exploration and illegal identification on the Internet, causing concern. In recent years, people's enthusiasm for archaeology and collection has continued to rise, and treasure hunting TV programs have been highly sought after. Live broadcasts and short videos such as online treasure hunting and ancient tomb exploration have also quickly become popular, which not only meets the needs of the audience but also creates some hidden dangers. In the live streaming program of treasure appraisal, some anchors claim to be "versatile experts", claiming to be proficient in identifying and accurately valuing various cultural relics such as calligraphy and painting, ceramics, bronze ware, jade, coins, etc. The number of online viewers in these live streaming rooms is often considerable, but while the audience expects to have the right to judge, they have no ability to judge the accuracy of the anchor's appraisal results. In fact, cultural relic appraisal is a complex discipline that involves knowledge from multiple fields such as archaeology, history, paleography, and art. Qualified cultural relic appraisers not only need to have a solid theoretical foundation, but also rich practical experience and appraisal skills. Even experts usually only make achievements in a certain type of cultural relic appraisal field, and there are few versatile experts. However, most forensic live broadcasts still use traditional ophthalmic identification methods, lacking scientific instrument measurement and comprehensive scientific judgment, and the accuracy of their identification results is questionable. In addition, online forensics overemphasizes the economic value of cultural relics and uses them as a selling point to attract audiences, while ignoring the important cultural connotations of cultural relics. In formal collectibles trading, the price of cultural relics is influenced by multiple factors, and investment carries certain risks. Some video bloggers and anchors, in order to attract traffic, use gimmicks such as "treasure hunting" and "sky high prices" to deliberately avoid the risks of collection investment and the real market situation, mislead the public, and disrupt the order of the cultural relics market. Moreover, providing information convenience for illegal and criminal activities such as excavating ancient tombs, or assisting in the offline resale of cultural relics through online promotion, poses a threat to the safety of cultural relics. Online treasure hunting is not illegal. The special action carried out by the two departments this time is an inevitable requirement for protecting cultural heritage and a powerful measure to purify the online environment. On this basis, relevant departments should further strictly monitor and strengthen the supervision of online forensics, and standardize online forensics behavior. It is recommended to provide professional qualification certification for online authentication hosts and appraisers, clarify their legal responsibilities and obligations, and ensure that related activities are more standardized and orderly. At the same time, we urge relevant platforms to clarify their responsibilities, strengthen the qualification review, content review, and information filtering of online forensics, and resolutely resist vulgar curiosity and traffic fraud. For those suspected of illegal and criminal activities, they should cooperate with law enforcement departments to prevent illegal cultural relics trading. From another perspective, the popularity of online forensics reflects the public's recognition and interest in China's long history and rich culture. Short videos and live broadcasts can help popularize knowledge of cultural relics and spread excellent culture. However, this process must adhere to authenticity and seriousness, avoid false advertising and mockery, and cannot become a platform for criminal activities. It is necessary to severely crack down on illegal identification activities under the guise of treasure hunting, effectively protect consumer rights, and promote the healthy development of online treasure hunting. Public platforms should actively fulfill their social responsibilities, clarify their value orientation, and guide forensic bloggers to focus on disseminating cultural heritage knowledge and traditional culture. Practitioners in cultural relic appraisal should also adhere to professional ethics and keep in mind the mission of inheriting Chinese culture. Only when the relevant parties clarify their responsibilities, relevant departments actively collaborate, and the whole society participates and effectively supervises, can we tell the story of Chinese cultural relics in the new era while maintaining market order.
