Sow the seeds of poetry into the hearts of children
2024-11-20
After a year and eight days of continuous walking, the "Fly Up, Gao Kaitong's Poetry Enters Famous Schools" campaign of the Chinese Poetry Society's New Era Poetry Torch Relay has recently come to an end. Poet Gao Kai traveled through 63 primary, secondary, and tertiary schools or poetry stations in 22 provinces and cities (regions), completing an innovative and comprehensive roadshow style poetry dissemination. In recent years, various types of poetry and poet activities have been widely carried out on campus. A large number of outstanding poets such as Shu Ting, Yang Ke, Gao Kai, Lan Lan, Shu Cai, Wang Yizhen, An Wulin, Zuo Zuo, Feng Na, etc. have frequently entered the campus to teach poetry to children, share their childlike innocence and poetic meaning. Their interaction with children is warm and touching. This bidirectional rush triggered by poetry is thought-provoking: what does poetry present in today's campus? What is its contemporary value? How to sow the seeds of poetry into the hearts of children? The seeds of poetry on campus have taken root and sprouted. When it comes to poetry, many people spontaneously talk about the "golden age of poetry" - the 1980s. At that time, the popularity of poetry on campus and in society was no less than that of today's concerts. After the 1980s, poetry lost its glory on campus. How is poetry developing on campus nowadays? From my observation, outside of the curriculum, poetry mainly exists in small-scale interest groups and poetry societies on campus. For example, some teachers are poets themselves, and they take their children to read and write poetry based on their personal hobbies, insisting on poetry education Xu Zhi, the editor in chief of "Chinese Campus Literature", believes that the spark of poetry on campus has always been there, and in recent years, some textbooks have added more space for poetry, and the middle and high school entrance exams have begun to involve poetry writing, which are all positive signals. In the past year, Fang Weiping, Honorary Dean of the Children's Literature Research Institute at Ludong University and Deputy Director of the Children's Literature Committee of the Chinese Writers Association, has received over 10 types of poetry collections created by children. As an organizer or judge of numerous poetry competitions, he noticed that "more and more children are participating in the feast of contemporary poetry writing. More and more poems created by children are proving to the world that poetry is the natural eyes, senses, and language of childhood." "I swallowed a bird in one gulp," "Clouds are trimming my hair."... Two years ago, at the award ceremony of the "Chinese Literature Festival · Lu Xun Literature Award Night," a group of "little poets" from Su Yu Hope Primary School in Huitong County, Huaihua, Hunan Province, brought surprise and emotion to countless people. A teacher born in 1995 brought poetry into the classroom, and the children's poetic journey began. Over the years, children have created more than 1400 poems, and the seeds of poetry have taken root and sprouted in this mountain village primary school. In the more than 60 schools that Gao Kai has visited, he was deeply moved by the children's enthusiasm for poetry and the emphasis placed on poetry education in some schools. When the torch of poetry was passed on to Tangxun Lake School in Guanggu, the First Affiliated Middle School of Central China Normal University, the principal sent a collection of appreciation poems and essays written by students after reading Gao Kai's poetry collection "The Child in the Grass". This allowed Gao Kai to personally experience the school's poetry teaching philosophy of "making the school a poetic and beautiful place". It was precisely because he saw the sparks and flames of poetry on campus that Gao Kai's inner flame grew stronger and stronger. Not only did he publish two poetry collections, "Flying, Flying" and "Seeds of Childhood," while walking, but he also put the publication of a new poetry collection, "Please Look into the Eyes of Children," on the agenda after his trip. Poetry enriches the colors of life. Confucius said, "Poetry can inspire, observe, unite, and express grievances." From ancient times to the present, the social function and educational value of poetry have been widely respected, and the influence of Chinese poetry education is extensive. So, what contemporary value does poetry have for students in school? What is the significance of carrying out the poetry torch relay? Poetry is the pearl on the crown of literature. It is the most condensed and impactful expression of human emotions, and has great value for us to understand the world, ourselves, beauty, and the meaning of life Xu Zhi believes that "poetry provides a way of life and a way of viewing the world. We don't necessarily have to become poets, but we need to know what poetry is and how to live it poetically. This is also the significance of carrying out the torch relay of poetry." In the view of Cui Xinping, a professor at Taiyuan Normal University and an expert in children's literature, poetry is the most primitive carrier for humans to perceive and express the world in an artistic way. It has special significance and value for the richness of the human spiritual world. Sun Yuhu, the deputy editor in chief of Shanghai Jiujiu Scholar, believes that a poetic perspective will make the world less rigid, thus resisting the storms of life. The poetic potential, as a possibility, is contained in the authentic survival and experience of children. Their perception of the world is mainly instinctive, fleshy, rough, and full of vitality. Their relationship with the world is simple, direct, yet candid and pure. With just a flame and an opportunity, the poetic experience in their hearts will ignite the flame of life Associate Professor Jing Lipeng from the School of Literature at Hebei Normal University believes that sowing the seeds of poetry into children's hearts is not a strong implantation of ideas and knowledge, but a call, a revelation, and a possibility of turning stone into gold. On a large scale, poetry shapes the character of the Chinese nation and is a cultural symbol of a nation. From a small perspective, poetry can cultivate virtue, enlighten wisdom, nurture beauty, and convey emotions. It can build a beautiful spiritual world and enrich the colors of life Author and head of the "Firefly" Poetry Society at Shangdi Primary School affiliated with Tsinghua University, Li Xuezhi, said. In the interview, it was unanimously agreed that the key to sowing the seeds of poetry in children's hearts is to select good poems that are suitable for them. Poetry entering schools is not limited to children's poetry. There are good poems suitable for all ages in both ancient and new poetry Yang Ke, the president of the Chinese Poetry Society, emphasized the importance of teaching methods when editing poetry collections suitable for children and conducting poetry education. What is good poetry? How to bring children into the wonderful world of poetry? Fang Weiping believes that the appearance of good poetry is rich and the standards are not singular. Taking excellent children's poetry as an example, it often has the following characteristics: close to the feelings and experiences of children, simple language, rich interest, harmonious unity of rhythm and imagery, authentic and full taste of childhood life, and under close reading, one can always appreciate the connotation and expression of the spirit of childhood life. The ultimate goal of children's poetry art is to gain a direct insight and profound understanding of the true essence of childhood life. He believes that good poetry works and good poetry teaching can open up a wonderful world of literary language for children, allowing them to experience the unique fun of poetic expression. "Poetry reading and teaching, parents and teachers must put children's interests first, ultimately to strengthen, enhance, and deepen this inner interest. In poetry review, there is a consensus that if the language is full of big slogans, slogans, and function words, it can basically be judged as not a good poem Xu Zhi pointed out that "for a poem, the best thing is nouns, followed by verbs, and finally adjectives and so on. Too many adjectives in a poem often means that the poet has not accurately grasped the details and characteristics of things, has not delved into the interior of things, or lacks imagination." Choosing and teaching good poetry is a systematic project. Xu Zhi advocates that all parties take active action and regard poetry education as an important tool for moral and aesthetic education at the school level, because poetry is the most convenient and moving artistic carrier for dissemination; From the perspective of literary workers, efforts should be made to select good poems that are suitable for children, especially those that are close to the current scene of poetry creation; From a societal perspective, wealthy individuals should contribute financially and exert strong efforts to actively create a social atmosphere of reading, writing, and loving poetry. Xu Zhi emphasized that poetry reading should not be neglected by both teachers and students in school. It is necessary to read poetry from ancient and modern times, both in China and abroad. Only by reading more can one truly appreciate the inner mysteries of poetry. To read extensively and continuously, and to read good poetry Jing Lipeng further pointed out that "currently, students' poetry reading mainly comes from poetry history, poetry anthologies, etc. The poetry works themselves are selected and shaped. Classic poetry is often based on some consensus, while anthologies have more personalized colors. Students should pay attention to comparative differentiation in the reading process." Jing Lipeng advocates promoting poetic enlightenment for adults. Because the sowing of poetry seeds is largely accomplished or led by adults. In a world dominated by adults, only when they recognize the intrinsic connection between poetry and life can they nurture and summon the poetic potential and childlike heart that children possess in their lives. It may not be easy to truly achieve this, but it is precisely in this difficulty that the importance of poetry for "adults" and "cultivating the mind" can be seen even more. (New Society)
