At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (hereinafter referred to as the "Convention") being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, inspired by the Olympic Truce, about 130 countries joined the "COP Truce" initiative, calling on countries to cease military actions and unite to address climate change during the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The statement issued by the President of the conference recently stated that the ceasefire period is scheduled for November, the month of the climate change conference. The statement states that the "COP ceasefire" has two core objectives: to reduce the impact of military emissions on the environment and to promote unity in addressing climate change. About 130 countries, including China, have joined the initiative, which has also received support from over 1000 international organizations, representatives of private enterprises, civil society organizations, and influential public figures. The statement said that global military activities emit a large amount of greenhouse gases, estimated to account for 5.5% of the world's annual emissions, which is higher than the sum of the aviation and shipping industries. Conflicts have devastating impacts on the environment, damaging ecosystems, polluting soil, water, and air, exacerbating climate crises, and hindering efforts to protect natural resources. The inspiration for the "COP Truce" comes from the Olympic Truce. In 1993, the 48th United Nations General Assembly first reviewed and adopted the Olympic Truce resolution. Subsequently, the host countries of the Olympic and Winter Olympics have submitted Olympic Truce resolutions to the United Nations. COP29 opened on November 11th and is scheduled to last until the 22nd. Representatives of the Convention's contracting parties, business leaders, scientists, youth representatives, media journalists, and other stakeholders from around 200 countries and regions will attend the conference.
