Preventing and controlling myopia in adolescents requires moving the threshold forward

2024-11-14

Recently, the Ministry of Education, together with the National Health Commission and the National Bureau for Disease Control and Prevention, issued the "Notice on Effectively Strengthening the Prevention and Control of Myopia in Kindergartens and Primary Schools at Key Stages" (referred to as the "Notice"), which made efforts to strengthen the prevention and control of myopia in kindergartens and primary schools at key stages. It requires moving the prevention and control checkpoint forward, grasping the prevention and control work at key stages, and effectively reducing the occurrence of myopia in young children and primary school students. The latest data released by the National Health Commission shows that the overall myopia rate among children and adolescents in China is 52.7%, including 35.6% for primary school students, 71.1% for junior high school students, and 80.5% for high school students. In recent years, the overall myopia rate among children and adolescents in China has been on the rise, and it is also showing a trend towards younger age groups. The situation of prevention and control is not optimistic. The overall increase in myopia rate among adolescents has attracted high attention from the country and relevant departments. In August 2018, eight departments including the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission issued the "Implementation Plan for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Myopia in Children and Adolescents", proposing to include the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents, overall myopia rate, and physical health status in government performance evaluations, incorporate visual health into quality education, and include the physical and mental health, academic burden, and other aspects of children and adolescents in the national compulsory education quality monitoring and evaluation system. Local governments and schools that have continuously declined the physical health level of children and adolescents for three years will be held accountable in accordance with laws and regulations. Through continuous efforts, the myopia rate among children and adolescents in China has been curbed in recent years. However, the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents is still a long way to go. The Ministry of Education and three other departments have issued a notice, which includes eight deployments: creating conditions to ensure sufficient outdoor activity time, focusing on changing parents' emphasis on treatment over prevention, actively improving the visual environment, strengthening targeted visual health education, and enhancing the role of visual monitoring and early warning. Each deployment is very important and indispensable for preventing and controlling myopia in children and adolescents. A major highlight of the Notice is the requirement for all levels and departments to move forward with prevention and control measures, and to firmly grasp the key stages of myopia prevention and control in kindergartens and primary schools. This work approach is highly targeted. To prevent and control myopia in children and adolescents, we need to start from a young age. Early intervention is beneficial for the prevention and treatment of myopia. Good eye habits should be cultivated from a young age, and proactive prevention and control measures should be formed as early as possible. Many children and adolescents with myopia have hidden dangers in their early childhood, such as insufficient attention or lack of relevant knowledge from parents, and weak awareness of myopia prevention and control. Some parents are accustomed to "watching TV with their children" (letting them pass the time watching TV), or using electronic devices as "nannies". If children do not develop good eye habits from a young age, their vision is likely to be overdrawn during early childhood, and the pressure of using their eyes is greater in primary and secondary school, making them more prone to myopia. To effectively implement the deployment of the "Notice" from the three departments, it is crucial for parents, schools, education departments, and other parties to truly pay attention to the issue of myopia in children and adolescents, recognize that it has become a prominent educational problem and a problem for the growth of minors, and has become a "pain point" that troubles the majority of children and adolescents. It is urgent to take effective measures to effectively respond and comprehensively manage it. For example, to change the utilitarian tendency of education, control children's use of electronic products time, and do a good job in detail control; To increase outdoor activity time, strengthen physical exercise, ensure sufficient sleep and proper nutrition, and so on. Reducing the stock of "small glasses" and curbing their increase requires sustained efforts from all levels, departments, and sectors of society. We must not only move the prevention and control checkpoint forward, but also not slack off in other stages of prevention and control work. We must tighten the responsibility chain, form a joint governance force, and jointly eliminate this "pain point" on the growth path of children and adolescents, helping them grow up healthy and strong.
