Young people buying old drones are also resisting the "digital cage"

2024-10-31

Recently, the incident of "young people starting to use elderly computers" has attracted the attention of netizens. The reporter visited multiple mobile phone stores in Jinan Shandong Communication City and Huaqiang Electronic World and found that there is still a market for offline sales of elderly phones, with nearly half of the buyers being young people. Elderly computers have become a popular choice for some young people, which is truly an interesting consumer trend. It provides us with a new perspective to re-examine digital life and examine the relationship between people and technology. The elderly phone originally focused on simplicity - using traditional buttons instead of a large LCD screen, with functions limited to basic calling and SMS services, and unable to carry trendy apps. The trend of young people choosing elderly care devices is undoubtedly a rebellion against the trend of smartphones. The convenience brought by smartphones is self-evident. Now we can travel, eat, take a taxi, and stay with just one phone to meet all our needs. But some social problems it has caused cannot be ignored. For example, the information cocoon is becoming increasingly severe, and various apps bring privacy leakage risks. Addiction to short videos and games has become a common problem. Under the convenient social connections of smartphones, some workers are even deprived of their personal time. In summary, as smartphones become increasingly advanced, their functions become more complex, and big data algorithms become more intuitive, our lives have become increasingly cumbersome and heavy, losing the simplicity and purity of the past. Behind the deep dependence on mobile phones is the loss of control of the 'self'. Young people attempting to achieve "mobile phone withdrawal" through elderly devices cannot be simply understood as avoiding life, information networks, and social interactions. At a deeper level, this is a positive resistance and boycott against the 'digital cage'. In today's environment, young people who switch to the elderly device mode may not be able to completely escape the influence of digital life, but it is actually a good thing when they pick up the elderly device and start forcibly "cutting off". At least, it can trigger a reflection on the potential problems of digital life in the whole society. The technology itself is neutral. The problem is not the smart phone itself, but how the Internet platform uses digital technology. From this perspective, the focus of reflection should not be limited to young people, but should cover all kinds of Internet platforms as builders of digital ecology. They have a responsibility to guide technology towards goodness, ensuring that technological development serves the overall well-being of society and the realization of a better life. (New Society)
