The Teana experimental array has been certified as part of the SKA Pathfinder project

Reporters learned from the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 21st that China's first dark energy radio detection experiment project, the Tianlai Experimental Array, was successfully certified as the SKA Pathfinder Project by the SKA Radio Astronomical Observatory, which will provide new scientific exploration opportunities for SKA. The Tianlai Experimental Array is located at the Hongliuxia Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory in Barkol County, Hami City, Xinjiang. It mainly conducts neutral hydrogen survey experiments and can be used to study the large-scale structure of the universe, dark energy, and other related cosmic frontier issues. The Teana experimental array consists of two types of antennas: cylindrical and disc-shaped. Among them, the cylindrical radio array has 3 cylindrical reflector antennas and 96 feed sources installed; The dish shaped radio array has 16 parabolic antennas with a diameter of 6 meters. As a Pathfinder project, the Teana experimental array can test the relevant detection techniques of neutral hydrogen survey experiments, thereby extracting weak 21 centimeter neutral hydrogen signals. These technologies can all be applied to SKA projects. By conducting practical observation work and analyzing real data, we can discover some practical problems that cannot be fully considered through theoretical analysis alone Chen Xuelei, chief scientist of the Teana Program and researcher of the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the reporter. The Teana Pathfinder project has paved the way for the SKA Large Radio Observatory. Even though we have now entered the initial operational phase, existing radio antennas and experimental projects will still be able to provide insights for our scientific plans and research foundations Robert Braun, Scientific Director of SKA Radio Astronomy Observatory, said. It is reported that SKA is currently under construction as the next-generation giant radio telescope array, and is also a collaborative telescope project between governments. Currently, 10 countries including China, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Australia are its official member countries. The SKA Pathfinder and Pioneer projects include multiple large-scale scientific facilities related to SKA science and technology from around the world. (New Society)
