Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Obesity (2024 Edition) Released

2024-10-21

Clarify the definition, diagnostic criteria, classification, staging, and related diseases of obesity; Standardize the clinical diagnosis and treatment pathway of obesity in China, and improve the homogenization level of obesity diagnosis and treatment in medical institutions... Recently, the National Health Commission released the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obesity (2024 Edition)" to guide further improvement of the standardization level of obesity diagnosis and treatment in China. In recent years, the prevalence of overweight and obese individuals in China has been continuously increasing. As an independent disease in chronic diseases and an important pathogenic factor in various chronic diseases, the diagnosis and treatment of obesity has attracted widespread public attention. As the first authoritative guide for the diagnosis and treatment of obesity issued by the National Health Commission, the guide emphasizes evidence-based medicine and interdisciplinary cooperation, providing a scientific, standardized, and homogeneous guidance path for clinical diagnosis and treatment of obesity Zhang Zhongtao, Chairman of the Guidelines Writing Committee and Vice President of Beijing Friendship Hospital, introduced that the guidelines provide detailed guidance and standardization in the fields of clinical nutrition, drug treatment, surgical treatment, behavioral and psychological intervention, and exercise intervention for obesity, ensuring medical quality and safety and safeguarding patients' health rights and interests. How to diagnose obesity and to what extent do medical interventions are needed? The guidelines specify that the diagnostic criteria for obesity include four categories based on body mass index, body shape characteristics, body fat ratio, and diagnostic criteria for childhood and adolescent obesity. Among the adult population in China, a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 28kg/㎡ or higher (weight divided by height squared) is considered obesity. Ji Linong, Chairman of the Guidelines Writing Committee and Director of the Endocrinology Department at Peking University People's Hospital, introduced that in order to guide clinical diagnosis and treatment, the guidelines further refine the grading of obesity levels, including mild, moderate, severe, and extremely severe, and provide targeted treatment based on the presence of obesity related diseases. Clinical practice can find corresponding and evidence-based treatment plans in the guidelines. Experts emphasize that most overweight and obesity are caused by unhealthy lifestyles, and the fundamental solution is to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, including controlling weight within a healthy range through a reasonable diet and appropriate exercise. The clinical treatment of obesity, no matter what method is adopted, is based on changes in patient behavior. Only when one's own behavior changes and subjective initiative is exerted, can the prevention and treatment effect be maximized. (New Society)
