In the western border of our country, there is a charming small town called Jiashi County. It is located in an oasis in the southwest of Xinjiang and is a shining pearl in the lower reaches of the Kashgar alluvial plain. The unique water, soil, light, and heat resources here provide excellent natural conditions for the development of characteristic industries. Jiashi County is not only renowned for its Jiashi melons, but also known as the "hometown of Chinese new plums". Nowadays, the Xinmei industry is becoming a powerful driving force for the development of this small town. How is Xinmei "New"? Jiashi Xinmei, also known as Ximei, belongs to the Rosaceae family and is a European plum species. It is a local new variety developed by grafting and domesticating the original wild Kalyuluk sour plum variety from Jiashi County, Xinjiang with European plum introduced from abroad. In August 2009, it was recognized by the Xinjiang Forest Variety Approval Committee and named Xinmei 1. After more than 20 years of promotion and improvement, the Jiashi New Plum has been formed, with the specific variety and origin label of "New Plum". In recent years, Xinmei has continued to thrive in the high-end fruit market in China, competing with imported Ximei. With the continuous upgrading of the domestic consumer market, the advantages of producing area of domestic fresh plum are gradually highlighted, and it has become a new favorite fruit on the table of countrymen. Jiashi County is one of the earliest regions in China to introduce and test new plum varieties. After more than 20 years of promotion and improvement, excellent varieties such as New Plum No.1 (France), No.2 (Goddess), and No.3 (Steller) have been cultivated. The reason why Xinmei was introduced to Jiashi County for cultivation is mainly due to the superior natural conditions, market demand, economic benefits, and strong support and promotion from the government. The planting area of new plums in Jiashi County has reached 570000 mu, with 410000 mu of fruit bearing in 2024 and a yield of 370000 tons, accounting for 50% of the national planting area and 70% of the yield, making it the largest new plum production and sales base in China. The "2023 Fruit Regional Public Brand Value Report" jointly released by the China Fruit Circulation Association and the CARD Agricultural Brand Research Center of Zhejiang University shows that the "Jiashi Xinmei" brand has entered the brand list for the first time, with a regional public brand value of up to 2.945 billion yuan. 116 brands from across the country made the list, with Jiashi Xinmei ranking 52nd. Kurban Wupuer, a villager from Guzai Village, Yingmaili Town, Jiashi County, attaches great importance to fruit quality and texture. He timely prunes and prunes the branches, fertilizes and applies pesticides, achieving a yield of over 2 tons of new plums per mu, with an average fruit weight of 43 grams and a maximum weight of 57 grams per fruit. He has been awarded the title of "Jiashi New Plum King" for two consecutive years. As a skilled grower, Kurban Wupuer not only taught villagers how to plant new plums well, but also established a cooperative to attract more than 40 seasonal workers, extending the industrial chain, expanding sales channels, and increasing employment opportunities.
