WTO seminar focuses on China's contribution to climate change through green transformation

2024-09-11

During the World Trade Organization's 2024 Public Forum, the Globalization Think Tank held a seminar titled "Utilizing China's Green Transformation to Mitigate Global Climate Change: Perspectives, Opportunities, and Challenges" in Geneva, Switzerland on the 10th, focusing on trade policies and climate change response, as well as China's positive contributions in this field. The seminar was chaired by Wang Huiyao, Chairman of the Globalization Think Tank, and representatives from China, the United States, Europe, and Africa discussed the topics. The seminar received a warm response and attracted over 100 representatives from WTO members, media, and think tanks to attend. Yi Xiaozhun, former Vice Minister of Commerce of China and former Deputy Director General of the World Trade Organization, stated at the seminar that China's new energy industry has made positive contributions to global emissions reduction. In 2022, China's wind and photovoltaic products helped other countries reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 573 million tons, providing more affordable new energy products for consumers in various countries and helping to alleviate inflationary pressures in relevant countries. Yi Xiaozhun pointed out that the development of China's new energy industry does not rely on government subsidies, and subsidies can never create a healthy industry. The development of China's new energy industry is driven more by fierce market competition, rapid technological iteration, and constantly expanding market size. Government policies have played a "signal light" role in encouraging research and development, infrastructure construction, and cultivating consumer markets. Meanwhile, some countries have adopted protectionist policies, which have had a serious negative impact on global efforts to address climate change. Former Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohammed emphasized that the green transformation of African countries will bring huge opportunities in renewable energy, infrastructure, metal processing, and other areas, but it is necessary to attract foreign investment and technology and achieve local production capacity. Strengthening international cooperation is crucial, while subsidy wars and protectionism will pose challenges to Africa. Erville Fabry, a well-known climate policy expert in the European Union, stated that despite the electric vehicle friction between Europe and China, China has an undeniable leadership position in the new energy industry chain. The EU needs to maintain contact with China, attract Chinese companies to invest in Europe, and share opportunities for green development. Adam Posen, director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in the United States, called for stronger cooperation between Europe and China to reach a high standard bilateral agreement. The attending guests unanimously agreed that the policies of various countries to address climate change and promote green transformation should not violate multilateral rules, and the World Trade Organization should play an important role in formulating an active trade agenda and strengthening coordination between trade and other policies. The Public Forum is the flagship public diplomacy event of the World Trade Organization. This year's forum theme is "Re globalization: Better Trade, Creating a Better World", and more than 130 seminars have been held. The Chinese side's hosting of this seminar is another positive attempt to actively participate in the reform of the global governance system and promote all parties to address global challenges within a multilateral framework.
