The integration of AI technology into universities presents both opportunities and challenges

2024-09-09

The recruitment promotional video of Peking University fully utilizes AI technology to provide people with a unique visual experience; Shanghai Jiao Tong University has carefully created the "Freshman AI Experience Map", allowing freshmen to have a comprehensive understanding of the campus from the perspective of "AI (artificial intelligence)+HI (human intelligence)" and grasp the pulse of cutting-edge AI information; All municipal public universities in Beijing will offer AI general education courses... With the continuous iteration and upgrading of the new generation of artificial intelligence technology, the footprint of AI in school education is also increasing, and related social discussions are becoming more and more enthusiastic. China attaches great importance to the profound impact of artificial intelligence on education, actively promotes the deep integration of artificial intelligence and education, and promotes educational reform and innovation. At the recently held 2024 China Automation and Artificial Intelligence Education Conference, experts pointed out that cultivating students' creativity in easily using and mastering artificial intelligence is a necessary educational concept to cope with the era of intelligence. This viewpoint is widely recognized. For universities that are "key centers of education", how to promote the deep integration of artificial intelligence and education through safe and reliable methods, solve teaching problems, innovate teaching styles, optimize educational effects, and improve educational quality is a problem that must be faced directly. Objectively speaking, AI technology can not only provide new fields in time and space, but also empower the generation of a new teaching paradigm in teacher-student interaction. From a practical perspective, traditional teaching methods focus on one-way transmission of knowledge by teachers. With the rapid development and popularization of network informationization, a "teacher-student+network" model has gradually formed, which has improved the richness of teaching scenarios and the flexibility of teacher-student interaction. Nowadays, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, especially after the emergence of language models, the teaching form is moving towards the "TSAI" (teacher, student, artificial intelligence) ternary mode. The interaction between teachers and students and knowledge, teachers and students, and teachers and students and artificial intelligence has undergone fundamental changes. AI technology is no longer just a simple assistant, and numerous AI platforms have deeply participated in the entire process of students' learning and cognition. Therefore, in the face of new situations and changes brought about by technological development, teachers need to actively adapt and quickly seek change, identify the role and positioning of AI technology in teaching activities, and more importantly, identify the diverse roles they play, in order to achieve two-way empowerment. Today, teachers need to transform from educators to 'co learners'. The new generation of college students have a fast acceptance speed of new technologies and information, strong exploration and thirst for knowledge. Teachers should consciously establish collaborative learning relationships, utilize the advantages of AI technology, actively explore the deep laws of teaching activities, and think about and stimulate new teaching methods. Shaping students' innovative ability for self-directed learning is an important mission of talent cultivation in universities. The emergence of AI technology has brought new opportunities for college students to shape their self-directed learning abilities, such as enriching learning resources, improving learning efficiency, stimulating learning motivation, deepening innovative thinking, enhancing learning interest, and strengthening cognitive abilities. However, it is worth noting that these conveniences often lead to students' dependence on AI technology, which may weaken their interest in participating in teaching activities and their ability to actively think about problems. Therefore, improving students' "AI literacy" is crucial. We should improve students' digital technology usage ability and level, enhance their technological literacy, guide them to scientifically and reasonably use relevant technological tools, and leverage their strengths to promote their comprehensive growth by offering general courses on artificial intelligence and strengthening practical training on AI technology. I hope that students can create more flexible time and customized modes for self-directed learning with the support of AI technology, making learning more flexible in time, personalized in space, and targeted, and truly achieving personalized teaching. The integration of AI technology into higher education is both an opportunity and a challenge. It is necessary for universities, teachers, and students to closely monitor the trend of digital education development, deeply analyze the evolution laws, practical scenarios, and presentation paths of education and teaching under the influence of artificial intelligence, fully utilize and give full play to the positive role of AI technology in educating and nurturing talents in universities, and use value guidance, self shaping, and comprehensive evaluation as ways to educate and nurture talents in a way that is easy for students to accept and understand, and help promote the digital and intelligent transformation of university teaching.
