Organic food is becoming increasingly popular on residents' dining tables. The report "China Organic Product Certification and Organic Industry Development (2024)" recently released by the State Administration for Market Regulation shows that China's organic industry maintains a strong growth momentum, with organic product sales exceeding 100 billion yuan for the first time in 2023, which is 1.61 times that of 2018. From 2018 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of organic product sales is 9.3%, making China the third largest organic consumer market in the world. Open the fresh food app and search for "organic". There are various organic products such as organic black pork, raw eggs, organic high calcium fresh milk, etc. In the fresh food platform Hema APP, the top selling organic products are imported organic glutinous bananas and plateau organic Italian lettuce, with monthly sales exceeding 10000 people. When shopping for food online or going to supermarkets offline, I tend to prefer organic products. Taking fresh milk as an example, a bottle of 240ml organic fresh milk costs about 5 yuan, while a bottle of 950ml regular milk costs about 15 yuan. The price difference is not much, "said Wang, who is currently selecting products at a Hema Fresh store in Beijing, to reporters. Organic products refer to products that follow the natural laws of animal and plant production processes and do not use chemically synthesized pesticides, fertilizers, growth regulators, or genetically modified technologies. Organic product certification is based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness, and care, respects the laws of ecological economy, emphasizes the optimization and unity of ecological, economic, and social benefits, and is an important means to meet the high-quality living and consumption upgrading of the people. The report shows that the current certification catalog for organic products in China mainly includes convenience foods such as grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy products, beverages, alcohol, biscuits, and tea, as well as food categories such as livestock and poultry products, aquatic products, seasonings, and special diets. It also includes non food categories such as natural fibers, textile products, feed, and traditional Chinese medicine, totaling 1257 products. In terms of planting area, China's organic agricultural land area continues to grow steadily, with a total area of over 4 million hectares by 2023, making it the fourth largest organic agriculture planting country in the world. From January to July this year, the issuance of organic product certification marks reached 3 billion. As of now, more than 18000 enterprises across the country have obtained over 30000 organic product certification certificates. From the specific sales of organic products, the number of organic product labels issued in China was 4.99 billion yuan, and the top three products were 3.75 billion pieces of sterilized milk, 130 million pieces of pasteurized milk, and 70 million pieces of Baijiu. Looking at the sales revenue of organic products within the country, processed products, plant-based products, and livestock and poultry products achieved 90.38 billion yuan, 6.16 billion yuan, and 170 million yuan respectively. In 2023, the sales revenue of organic products in China exceeded 100 billion yuan for the first time, reaching 101.6 billion yuan, including 96.9 billion yuan domestically and 4.7 billion yuan overseas. From the perspective of China's organic product exports, the Netherlands is the country with the largest export trade volume in China, with a trade volume of 150 million US dollars, accounting for 26.27% of China's organic product export trade volume. According to the statistics of FiBL (the world's top organic agriculture research center) in 2022, in 2022, the global per capita consumption of organic food will be 17 euros, Switzerland will be the first with 437 euros, and China's per capita consumption will be only 9 euros, lower than the global average; From the perspective of organic food market share, Denmark has the highest organic food market share (12%), while China's organic food market share is less than 2%, indicating that there is still great potential in the Chinese organic product consumption market. The report suggests that promoting the healthy development of China's organic industry requires simultaneous efforts from both the production and market sides. Firstly, it is necessary to increase consumer awareness of organic products, strengthen regulation, and enhance consumer trust. The second is to vigorously expand the sales channels of organic products through the combination of online and offline, and explore the domestic and international organic markets. The third is to adjust the structure of organic products, meet diversified needs, and increase product added value. The fourth is to extend the organic industry chain, promote the integration of multiple industries, and form a diversified development pattern. Organic product certification is an important guarantee for the healthy development of the organic industry. Pu Chun, Deputy Director of the State Administration for Market Regulation and Director of the State Administration for Market Regulation, stated that while the organic industry continuously meets consumers' demand for high-quality products, it can significantly increase the added value of agricultural products, enhance product brand value, and expand sales channels. To do a good job in organic product certification, firstly, we need to improve the system, strengthen supervision, and continuously enhance the credibility of certification; secondly, we need to strengthen policy guidance, publicity and promotion, and continuously improve the influence of certification; thirdly, we need to enhance our capabilities, optimize services, and continuously improve the effectiveness of certification, to safeguard the people's consumption with peace of mind, "said Pu Chun.
