Three newly selected geological heritage sites in China have been included in the global list of geological heritage place names

In October 2022, the International Union of Geosciences announced the first batch of 100 geological heritage site names worldwide, and a total of 7 geological heritage sites in China were selected. With the addition of the three selected sites in the second batch, China now has 10 global geological heritage sites. The "Plant Pompeii - Wuda Permian Vegetation Fossil Production Area" is located in Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. As a specific burial record of coal bearing forests in geological history, high-precision zircon dating results in volcanic ash indicate that the age of this coal bearing forest is about 298 million years ago, making it the earliest Permian coal bearing forest. As of now, the "Plant Pompeii City" in Wuhai has included five of the world's largest: the largest area of ancient forest practice restoration, the richest collection of contemporaneous coal bearing plant fossil specimens, the oldest cycad plant, the richest plant community of the order Platycodon, and the most complete reconstruction of fossil plants, thus adding the most new species to the ancient evolutionary life tree. The Dazhanpu Dinosaur Fossil Site in Zigong is located at the northeast end of the Sichuan Basin, with a set of continental strata from the Late Triassic to the Early Cretaceous exposed on the surface. The strata containing Middle Jurassic dinosaur fossils are about 180 meters thick. Up to now, more than 200 fossils of dinosaurs and other vertebrate animals have been excavated. Among them, 26 genera and 29 species have been identified, forming a highly diverse vertebrate animal community in the Middle Jurassic. The Dashanpu Dinosaur Fossil Site in Zigong has the most dense Middle Jurassic dinosaur fossils, and it is also a highly diverse group of vertebrate animals. Some unique dinosaur skeletal structures have also been discovered within the site, which is crucial for inferring dinosaur behavior. Guilin Karst in Guangxi is located in the middle of the the Nanling Mountain structural belt. It is mainly characterized by the tower shaped and cone shaped karst landforms around the beautiful Lijiang River and its tributaries, and many caves are developed at the same time. Different from the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, where the uplift is fast, Guilin has stable strata and relatively slow tectonic uplift, enhancing its scientific significance and becoming an important reference for global karst research. Guilin karst is a typical representative of continental tower karst, which is a geomorphological manifestation of the late stage of karst evolution in southern China, making it a representative area for conducting research on karst processes and their environmental impacts. It is reported that the seven geological heritage sites selected by China for the first batch of global geological heritage place names include: the national geological heritage protection area "Changxing Coal Mountain Permian/Triassic Biological Extinction and 'Golden Nails'", the world geological park "Beidan Jilin Desert in Inner Mongolia, Biluote High Sand Mountains and Lakes", "Hong Kong Early Cretaceous Acid Igneous Rock Columnar Joints", "Yunnan Shilin Karst", the world natural heritage and national geological park "Yunnan Chengjiang Cambrian Fossil Production Area and Fossil Library", "Rongbuk Canyon Slip Structure System in southern Tibet", "Mount Everest Ordovician Rocks", etc. (New Society)
