Wuhan experts discover new treatment plan for glioblastoma

The neurosurgery research team of Wuhan University People's Hospital (Hubei Provincial People's Hospital) designed and constructed a nanoparticle with self catalytic function and brain tumor targeting ability, which showed significant ability in penetrating the blood-brain barrier and targeting glioblastoma, and demonstrated good effects in inhibiting the growth of glioblastoma. The relevant results were recently published as a cover article in the international journal Small Science. According to Zhang Shenqi, the corresponding author of the paper and chief physician of the Department of Neurosurgery I at Wuhan University People's Hospital, glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in the adult central nervous system, characterized by rapid growth, high invasiveness, and high recurrence rate. In the treatment of glioblastoma, drug delivery is the main obstacle due to the presence of the blood-brain barrier. In this study, Zhang Shenqi's team screened a new plant chemical substance - methyl bazolon, and designed and constructed a methyl bazolon self-assembled nanoparticle with self catalytic function that can actively target tumor areas, carry small molecule drugs, and effectively kill glioblastoma cells and penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Zhang Shenqi stated that the nanoparticle can efficiently kill glioblastoma cells by inhibiting epithelial mesenchymal transition and inducing cell apoptosis, making it an effective therapeutic agent for glioblastoma; It can also be used to encapsulate other therapeutic agents to further improve the therapeutic efficacy of glioblastoma, providing a new therapeutic strategy for targeted therapy of glioblastoma.
