What do cancer patients need most for rehabilitation? Experts discuss and disclose research results in Shanghai

In China, the population of cancer patients is becoming increasingly large. How to more accurately meet the needs of these patients and their families? Recently, experts in the field of cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment from across the country gathered in Shanghai to conduct in-depth discussions on the "Expert Consensus on Tumor Integrated Rehabilitation Management (2024)" (draft for comments) from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The integrated rehabilitation practice project for 12 single tumor diseases was approved simultaneously. Yu Xianjun, Dean of Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital, stated that the Cancer Hospital is a member of the "national team" in the field of cancer prevention and treatment. It is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of tumors, guideline development and revision, medical research and achievement transformation in Shanghai and even the whole country. The "Good Medicine Empowerment" Cancer Rehabilitation Worker Training Program has supplemented the key link of "precision rehabilitation" in the "prevention screening diagnosis treatment rehabilitation" of tumors, solved the current situation of "cancer patients have needs but family doctors have nothing to do", and opened up the "last mile" of tumor patient management. Cancer patients have the highest demand for psychological support and adjustment during the rehabilitation period. From May to August 2023, the project team visited multiple communities and community health service centers in Shanghai, including Yinxing Street, Fenglin Street, Zhoupu Street, etc., and conducted in-depth interviews with grassroots social health care and management personnel, cancer patients, and their families. Research has found that cancer patients have the highest demand for psychological support and adjustment (80.41%), nutrition and dietary guidance (80%), and physical function rehabilitation (76.49%) services, and expect to receive more standardized services. However, at present, there are still difficulties in integrating rehabilitation service provision and system construction. The Expert Consensus on Integrated Rehabilitation Management of Tumors (2024) (Draft for Soliciting Opinions) was led by Gu Wenying, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital, to form an expert team. After a process of on-site investigation, research, framework development, and evidence sorting, it took 1 year and 3 months to form the draft for soliciting opinions. Hu Yan, Chairman of the Rehabilitation Management Committee of the Shanghai Anti Cancer Association and Dean of the School of Nursing at Fudan University, stated that the expert consensus recommendations provide operational guidelines for medical institutions at all levels to provide services in the future. Gathering national expert forces and cultivating talents in tumor rehabilitation management, grassroots medical care is not only the "outpost" of cancer prevention and treatment, but also the "gatekeeper" of residents' health. In March 2023, the Cancer Hospital and Shanghai Trust jointly launched the "Empowering Cancer Rehabilitation Promotion Workers with Good Medicine" project, bringing together more than 150 experts to launch 160 online courses covering comprehensive knowledge of tumor "prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and health". Over 750 students participated in the online training. 66 outstanding students completed a 4-day offline training in early July and successfully graduated. Dr. Zou Yuhua, Deputy Chief Physician of Nanjing East Road Community Health Service Center, stated that this training has completed 118 online training sessions and 4 consecutive days of advanced training, which is the first systematic learning of the basic and cutting-edge knowledge of "prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and health" of tumors. "As a general practitioner, I have established a trust relationship with residents, and these knowledge can better provide residents with early tumor prevention science popularization, nursing services during the treatment period, and rehabilitation guidance for long-term functional recovery." Targeting the grassroots level, 12 tumor rehabilitation management pilot projects have been launched. More than 10 experts from the Sports Rehabilitation Special Committee of the China Anti Cancer Association and the Rehabilitation Management Special Committee of the Shanghai Anti Cancer Association have demonstrated the 12 tumor rehabilitation promotion projects applied by tumor hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, and community health service centers, covering community tumor screening. Shanghai Trust has provided special funding for seven projects under the 'Shangshan' series of Shangxin Shanyi Empowering (Tumor Rehabilitation Training) Charity Trust. Gu Wenying, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University Affiliated Cancer Hospital, expressed great gratitude to Shanghai Trust for its support of the project. The project will last for three years, with the first two years focusing on talent cultivation and expert consensus writing, and the third year focusing on a pilot project for promoting and managing tumor rehabilitation. The ultimate goal is to establish a hierarchical tumor integrated rehabilitation management system that includes tumor hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, community health service centers, and communities and families, to meet the urgent needs of cancer patients.
