China successfully cultivates rice in large coalfield subsidence areas

Rice planted in shallow water areas caused by coal mining subsidence, in collaboration between Huaihe Energy Holdings Group and Anhui University of Science and Technology. On a former coal mining subsidence area in southern China, a batch of trial rice varieties have completed their first crop harvesting. On the floating fields in the water, heavy rice ears are pulled out from the rice stalks and slightly hang down, and occasionally fish jump out of the water. The once silent coal mining subsidence area is now a vibrant water area. This project, which attempts to achieve "planting rice on the water surface and aquaculture in underwater fishing" in shallow water areas caused by coal mining subsidence, is jointly completed by Huaihe Energy Holdings Group and Anhui University of Science and Technology. The project is located in Guqiao Town, Fengtai County, Huainan City, Anhui Province, covering 50 acres of rice trial planting. The first batch of trial varieties for this project has been harvested recently. The expert group, including several academicians of the CAE Member, gave evaluation opinions on the project through field visits, debriefing, consulting materials, and inquiry and discussion: the harvested rice "meets the national standards in quality", and rice planting also "improves the water quality in the trial planting area". The project staff are observing the growth of rice. This is the first rice planting project in China to be carried out on the water surface of a large subsidence area Professor Cui Hongbiao from the School of Earth and Environment at Anhui University of Science and Technology said that he is mainly responsible for the research and development of the nutritional mechanism of rice cultivation in his team. Xie Hongxu, Vice President of China Coal Industry Association, stated that this project fills the gap in green governance of coal mining subsidence areas in China. Like some countries, years of coal mining have led to the formation of many subsidence areas in some parts of China. According to relevant scientific research data and expert estimates from the National Development and Reform Commission, the area of coal mining subsidence in China exceeds 20000 square kilometers. In central China, where Anhui is located, the area of coal mining subsidence accounts for about 70% of the national stock. Xie Hongxu said that some coal mining surface subsidence has caused damage to ground buildings, roads, and ecological environment, especially some farmland that has been flooded, which has constrained the sustainable development of the mining area's economy and society. The Huainan Coalfield, belonging to Huaihe Energy Holdings Group, is the largest integrated coalfield in southeastern China in terms of resources. The success of the pilot lies in the formation of non-traditional arable land resources, which helps to resolve the contradiction between coal mining and arable land protection, "said Wang Shisen, chairman of the group. The project staff are conducting field management on the water surface of the subsidence area caused by coal mining. Yuan Liang, an academician of the CAE Member and president of Anhui University of Science and Technology, believes that through experiments, a complete set of systematic rice planting and breeding technology on the surface of coal mining subsidence areas has been integrated for the first time, which has explored an effective way for China and even the world in the field of comprehensive management of coal mining subsidence areas. It is reported that advanced technologies such as drones and water quality analyzers were used in the implementation of the project. At present, the team insists on daily observation and field management to cope with the challenges of pests and diseases during the heading stage. (New Society)
