The "2024 International Forum on the Protection of Grotto Temples" hosted by the National Cutural Heritage Administration was held in Dunhuang, Gansu Province on the 19th. The research experts of grotto temple protection from 16 countries focused on the theme of "promoting the exchange of 'Silk Road culture' and building a dream of 'the the Belt and Road' construction" for discussion and exchange, further gathering consensus from all parties, gathering wisdom from all sides, and promoting the exchange of "Silk Road culture" to go deeper and more practical. At the opening ceremony of the forum, there was also a launch ceremony for international cooperation between Dunhuang Academy and relevant cultural relics and archaeological research institutions in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and other countries, as well as a book donation ceremony for the opening of the Afghanistan Archaeology and Cultural Relics Protection Senior Talent Training Course. Guan Qiang, deputy director of the National Cutural Heritage Administration, said that the grotto temples are the crystallization and historical witness of cultural exchanges and mutual learning. China's grotto temples demonstrate the outstanding continuity, innovation, unity, inclusiveness and peace of Chinese civilization. We should make good use of the International Forum on the Protection of Grotto Temples as an important platform, support more Chinese cultural heritage protection research institutions to continuously "invite in" and "go out" through extensive exchanges and deep cooperation, continue to strengthen cooperation with international peers, and make due contributions to the protection and development of international cultural heritage. Zhao Shengliang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Dunhuang Academy, said that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Dunhuang Academy. For a long time, several generations of Mogao Grottoes people, represented by Chang Shuhong, Duan Wenjie, and Fan Jinshi, have adhered to the Mogao spirit of "sticking to the desert, being willing to contribute, daring to take responsibility, and pioneering", scientifically protected precious cultural relics in the grottoes, devoted themselves to studying the diverse values of Dunhuang culture, and made efforts to explore the open utilization of cultural heritage. The institute's protection, research, and promotion undertakings have achieved leapfrog development. The Dunhuang Research Institute is a comprehensive research institution responsible for managing the world cultural heritage the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, Tianshui Maijishan Grottoes, Yongjing Bingling Temple Grottoes, and the national key cultural relics protection units Guazhou Yulin Grottoes, Dunhuang West Thousand Buddha Cave, and Qingyang North Grottoes Temple. Zhao Shengliang stated that in recent years, Dunhuang Academy has continuously summarized new Dunhuang experiences in the protection, research, promotion, and management of cultural heritage in the new era, striving to create industry benchmarks. Up to now, the Academy has developed into a cultural and museum management organization with the largest number of world cultural heritage and the widest cross regional scope in China, a site museum with considerable influence at home and abroad, the largest research entity of Dunhuang Studies Studies, and a model for the protection and utilization of cultural heritage. This forum is jointly organized by the Cultural Relics Bureau of Gansu Province, the People's Government of Jiuquan City, the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, and the China Association for the Protection of Historical Sites. It is specifically implemented by the Dunhuang Academy and the People's Government of Dunhuang City. During the forum, three sub forums will also be held on the protection concept and technology of grotto temples, archaeology and value interpretation, and management and capacity building.
