The first nationwide DMA cheating case has been solved, and the "CrossFire" cheating sales gang has been arrested
2024-08-19
Recently, under the guidance of the Network Security Detachment of Wuhan Public Security Bureau, the Huangpi Branch of Wuhan Public Security Bureau in Hubei Province successfully cracked a case of providing programs and tools for intrusion and illegal control of computer information systems, and arrested four suspect for selling DMA plug-ins. It is reported that this is also the first case of DMA cheating that has been cracked in China. The resolution of this case will undoubtedly have a significant deterrent effect on cybercrime related to the production and sale of game cheats, in the context of the deployment of the "Clean Net 2024" special action. The DMA cheating criminal gang has been arrested. According to the investigating police, on May 6th of this year, the Huangpi Sub bureau's Fukou Police Station received a report from the public that someone had made and sold Tencent's game CrossFire DMA cheating, which caused damage to the integrity of the game's computer information system and resulted in the player's game account being suspended by Tencent. After receiving the report, the Cybersecurity Brigade of Huangpi District Branch of Wuhan Public Security Bureau immediately launched an investigation, sorted out and investigated the relevant clues provided by the victims. After overcoming the difficulties of high secrecy, strong technical skills, and difficult investigation of cybercrime, they successfully mastered the production and sales chain of the DMA cheat. Subsequently, the police involved in the case went to Wuxi, Liyang, Jiangsu, Dongguan, Guangdong and other places, successfully captured four suspect, and destroyed the three-level external sales network composed of upstream, middle and downstream people at one stroke, involving more than 2 million yuan. The investigation found that the suspect, Gong, Yang, Cai and Luo, were game players who played through the line of fire. During the game, they learned that the DMA plug-in was powerful and not easy to be intercepted. In pursuit of interests, they took risks and profited from selling the plug-in online. At present, four suspect are suspected of providing intrusion and illegal control of computer information system programs and tools, and criminal coercive measures are taken according to law, and the case is still under further investigation. After identification, the DMA game cheat program mainly uses special hardware and software tools to read and modify game memory data, thereby achieving functions such as perspective and automatic aiming. DMA, also known as Direct Memory Access, was originally a computer technology for reading and writing data, but in recent years it has been used by a few criminals to create cheating devices for game cheating and profit from it. Compared to traditional software cheating techniques, DMA cheating allows hardware devices to directly access system memory, bypass CPU data transfer to read and modify game memory data, and is difficult to identify through conventional anti cheating techniques. Therefore, it has stronger concealment and greater harm. In recent years, with the decrease of related technology costs, the development trend of low standardization, strong customizability, and wide application scenarios of DMA cheats with strong concealment has emerged as a new "accomplice" of cheating black production criminal gangs. The successful resolution of this case means that domestic judicial authorities can have more reference experience when dealing with DMA cheating related cases. Especially in the process of tracking case evidence, the investigating police gradually explore and understand the black industry chain of cheating production, distribution, and sales through in-depth sorting of clues, which helps the judicial organs accelerate the improvement of normalized governance mechanisms, timely discover loopholes that may be exploited by criminal gangs, and prevent criminals from taking advantage of them. It is reported that in response to the threat of cheating and black production, and to avoid the destruction of the gaming industry by illegal elements, domestic and foreign game manufacturers have successively launched various targeted anti cheating measures in recent years. Some manufacturers have also actively cooperated with relevant departments to crack down on cheating gangs, using legal means to protect their own and player rights, and helping the healthy development of the industry. Taking the Tencent owned online game "CrossFire" involved in this case as an example, its security team assisted the police in Qingdao, Shandong and Qinzhou, Guangxi in 2024 alone, successfully dismantling two groups involved in the production and sale of counterfeit products. Earlier this year, CrossFire also launched Security Mode 2.0, which further protects the legitimate rights and virtual property of normal users through more rigorous and detailed account security rules. Purifying the online environment and promoting healthy gaming is everyone's responsibility. The successful discovery of the first DMA cheating case in China means that the claim made by cheating developers that "DMA cheating is safe and hidden, difficult to trace" is completely groundless. The production and sale of DMA cheating that causes damage to the game's security environment will also be subject to legal sanctions. However, at the same time, we must also be aware that cracking down on online crimes such as cheating and trafficking cannot rely solely on the investment of judicial authorities and related enterprises in the field of security. In fact, the spread and use of various types of cheating software not only affects and destroys the normal gaming experience of players, but also poses a huge threat to the security of users' devices and virtual assets such as game accounts due to the fact that cheating software often uses technical means to invade and modify users' computer systems and hardware devices. The phenomenon of cheating hiding various stolen accounts and Trojan software implantation is not uncommon. To truly achieve a clear and green gaming environment and fundamentally prevent cheating behavior, it is necessary to have more game operation teams like CrossFire that firmly resist cheating behavior and actively cooperate with relevant departments to crack down on cheating gangs. It is also necessary for game players to uphold the concept of green health and stay away from any behavior that undermines a fair gaming environment. Finally, the Wuhan police investigating the DMA cheating case also remind the public that the internet is not a hiding place, nor is it a lawless place. The act of providing and selling game cheats online is explicitly prohibited by law. We hope that netizens will keep themselves clean and not violate the law. (New Society)
