New archaeological discovery in Sanxingdui: The production workshop for jade artifacts has been found!

2024-07-23

Sanxingdui Archaeological Site is New Again! On the 23rd, the reporter learned from the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology that the "production workshop" for jade and stone artifacts has been found! This is an important progress in the archaeological excavation of the Sanxingdui site, a major project of "Archaeological China". The Sanxingdui Site located in Guanghan City, Sichuan Province, reveals the historical and cultural significance of the ancient Shu civilization, vividly demonstrates the diversity of Chinese civilization, and opens a window for the world to appreciate Eastern civilization. This is the first discovery of a handicraft workshop at the Sanxingdui site. Using new materials to verify the origin of raw materials such as jade and stone artifacts in Sanxingdui, and to answer a series of questions about the functional layout of the ancient city of Sanxingdui, is an important step in the archaeological research of Sanxingdui. From 2022 to 2024, archaeologists discovered new remains related to the production and processing of jade artifacts at the Sanxingdui site. According to experts' preliminary judgment, they were identified as a "production workshop" for jade artifacts, dating back to the mid Shang Dynasty, approximately 3500 to 3400 years ago, earlier than the burial age of the Sanxingdui sacrificial pit. Near the Yanjia Courtyard in Moon Bay, Sanxingdui, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted archaeological exploration and successively found more than 400 high-level building foundations, ash pits, ash ditches, stone tool production and processing relics, and unearthed more than 4000 pieces of pottery, jade, stone tools, etc. This jade workshop site is located in a protected open space. The reporter saw on site that the "production workshop" was located about one kilometer north of the eight sacrificial pits in Sanxingdui, and less than 100 meters away from the Yanjiayuan jade pit where Sanxingdui was first discovered in 1927. The newly unearthed cultural relics, including raw materials, blanks, waste materials, fragments, and finished products of jade and stone, form a relatively complete chain of early handicraft industry, and it is preliminarily judged that the newly discovered artifacts are jade and stone workshops. The discovery of the 'production workshop' will uncover mysteries such as where the large amount of jade and stone materials unearthed from Sanxingdui came from, how the production technology is, the production process and circulation methods Ran Honglin, the director of the Sanxingdui Site Workstation at Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said. From "discovery" to "interpretation", in the future, we will also search for bronze ware production workshops to further uncover the "veil" of ancient Shu civilization and provide more powerful evidence for demonstrating the diversity and unity of Chinese civilization. Over the years, more than 60000 cultural relics have been unearthed, and the achievements are world-renowned. The new Sanxingdui Museum has been open for nearly a year, attracting over 5 million visitors from China and abroad. The dawn of civilization in Liangzhu and Erlitou, the textual inheritance of oracle bones in the Yin ruins, and the cultural treasures of Sanxingdui... People are drawing historical wisdom and increasing their confidence from more unsolved mysteries of civilization. (New Society)
