For the first time in China, artificial recruitment of nest boxes for wild breeding of hornbills has been achieved

2024-07-15

In Yingjiang County, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, after 123 days of incubation and chick rearing, a nest of crested wrinkled horned hornbills bred in an artificial nest box has recently successfully hatched. This is the first time that China's hornbills have successfully bred hornbills in the wild through artificial recruitment nest boxes. Rhinoceros birds are known as the "farmers of tropical rainforests" and can spread seeds over long distances, playing an important role in maintaining the relationship between animals and plants and expanding the area of tropical rainforests. Associate Professor Duan Yubao from Southwest Forestry University introduced that hornbills do not actively peck tree holes to build nests. They need to use natural tree holes or tree holes left by other animals to build nests. There are very limited natural nests suitable for hornbills to build nests in China. Adding artificial nest boxes for hornbills in suitable habitats is a good way to supplement hornbill nests. The successful breeding of hornbills in the wild through artificial recruitment of nest boxes has a very positive impact on the research, future population recovery, and species protection of hornbills in China. It is reported that three species of hornbills, including the crested wrinkled helmet hornbill, have stable breeding records in the "China Rhinoceros Valley" in Yingjiang County. In 2021, the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Dehong Prefecture established a hornbill patrol team mainly composed of protected area technicians, forest rangers, and community villagers to protect and monitor hornbills in the area. It was found that with the increase of hornbill population, there were situations such as nest competition and insufficient nesting trees. The Management and Protection Bureau of Tongbiguan Provincial Nature Reserve in Yunnan Province attempted to solve these problems by placing artificial recruitment nest boxes for hornbills. After three years of continuous correction and upgrading of the artificial recruitment nest boxes for hornbills, one nest of wrinkled crowned hornbills recently successfully achieved recruitment, breeding, and survival of young birds in the artificial recruitment nest box. We will continue to promote the application and dissemination of our achievements, carefully formulate a five-year action plan for the protection of hornbills, and promote the sustained and stable growth of the hornbill population and quantity in the 'China Rhinoceros Valley' through a series of innovative measures in conservation and breeding technology Yang Zhenghua, Director of the Forestry and Grassland Bureau of Dehong Prefecture, said.
