Release of the Scientific Report on China's Nutrient Measurement Model to Assist in Building a Healthy Dietary Environment
2024-07-11
Currently, unreasonable dietary patterns such as high sodium, high fat, and high sugar have become prominent issues affecting people's health. To prevent overweight, obesity, chronic disease prevention and control in children and adolescents, and help build a healthy dietary environment, on July 8th, the Chinese Nutrition Society organized a scientific press conference on the Chinese Nutrient Measurement Model in Beijing, and released the "Chinese Nutrient Measurement Model Scientific Report" (hereinafter referred to as the NP Model Report). The meeting was chaired by Ma Aiguo, Executive Vice Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society. Representatives from institutions, hospitals, and societies such as the National Health Commission, the State Administration for Market Regulation, the Women and Children's Work Committee of the State Council, the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Food Safety Risk Assessment Center, the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, the Beijing Youth Legal Aid and Research Center, and the China Advertising Association attended the meeting, totaling more than 200 people. In addition, representatives from international organizations, including the United Nations Children's Fund, also attended the meeting to jointly discuss the latest research progress and applications of nutrient measurement models. According to the definition of the World Health Organization, Nutrient Profiling refers to the scientific classification or ranking of food based on its nutritional content for the purpose of preventing diseases and promoting health. At present, it is recommended internationally to use the nutrient measurement method to classify and rank food, and develop corresponding nutrient measurement models to evaluate the nutrition of food, providing scientific basis for the formulation of relevant policies. The World Health Organization and multiple countries have adopted nutrient measurement methods to construct different nutrient measurement models, and have played an important role in promoting Front Of Package Labeling, limiting marketing and advertising for children, promoting health claims, and promoting formula improvement in businesses. In recent years, with the increasing global burden of obesity and chronic diseases, the development and application of nutrient measurement models have received increasing attention from countries and academia. This is mainly because, based on the increasing occurrence and development of chronic diseases, controlling risk factors has become one of the most effective measures in situations where medication and surgery are difficult to control Yang Yuexin, Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society, pointed out in her speech that the newly released Chinese nutrient measurement model is of great significance in regulating the marketing of foods such as high salt, high fat, and high sugar to children, and promoting the implementation of healthy eating policies. Dong Jingyu, a third level researcher at the Food Department of the National Health Commission, and Amanda Bissex, the Deputy Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund in China, respectively, expressed their hopes that this meeting can provide scientific basis for relevant policy formulation and promote the further implementation of the Healthy China strategy. According to the UK Ofcom FSA model, the French nutrition score label uses five levels of ABCDE corresponding to the nutritional and health status of food, known as the five color nutrition label, which is indicated by dark green, light green, yellow, orange red, and red. Among them, the letter A represents the most nutritious and healthy food, while the letter E represents the lowest or highest level of nutritional health in food; That is to say, dark green foods are encouraged to be eaten frequently, while red foods are recommended to be eaten less Dr. Ali Shirazi, Director of the Health and Nutrition Division of the United Nations Children's Fund in China, briefly introduced the international definition of Nutrient Profiling and the overview and application of different NP models developed by multiple countries around the world based on Nutrient Profiling. The results of the Global Burden of Disease Study show that excessive intake of high sodium, high fat, and high sugar foods, as well as insufficient intake of whole grains and fresh vegetables and fruits, have become the main risk factors for the diet of Chinese residents. The significant increase in obesity rates, especially among children and adolescents, has become an important public health issue Professor Han Junhua, Secretary General of the Chinese Nutrition Society, introduced the scientific development process and development goals of the Chinese NP model. She pointed out that in order to implement the Law on the Protection of Minors and promote children's health, it is necessary to develop a suitable nutrient measurement model for China. To this end, the Chinese Nutrition Society and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with domestic and foreign nutrition professional institutions, have worked hard for three years to construct a Chinese nutrient measurement model, aiming to standardize the marketing of unhealthy foods for children. Professor Kalpana Bhaskaran, Chairman of the Singapore Nutrition and Dietary Association, and Xu Yili, Director of the Food Safety Standards and Monitoring and Evaluation Office of the Shanghai Health Commission, shared innovative explorations in positive food labeling both internationally and domestically. "The nutritional selection grading labels in Shanghai mainly refer to domestic and foreign standards, consider the distribution of beverage nutritional components and the intake of beverages by the population. Finally, based on the content of non milk derived sugars, saturated fats, trans fatty acids, and non sugar flavorings in the beverages, the beverages are comprehensively evaluated and divided into A, B, C, and D. Beverages are recommended from A to D, with a decreasing degree of recommendation." Xu Yili said that the pilot program of nutritional selection grading labels has attracted widespread attention from society and has a good role in guiding people's consumption. After the pilot program, many enterprises actively improved their formulas, and the proportion of optimized product formulas exceeded 15%. In the future, Shanghai will continue to focus on product stability evaluation, exploration of pilot mechanisms, continued promotion of project implementation, and conducting effectiveness evaluations for different periods, scenarios, and populations. In the subsequent interview session, Yang Xiaoguang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society, Professor Chang Suying, a nutrition expert at the Children's Development Department of the United Nations Children's Fund in China, Zang Jiajie, Director of the Nutrition and Health Department of the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Gao Chao, Associate Researcher at the Nutrition and Health Institute of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Cao Ying, Director of Health Strategy, attended and answered questions from the on-site media. The interview was hosted by Professor Wang Zhu from the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The attending experts analyzed and introduced the international status of NP models, the importance of developing NP models in China, and the methods of developing NP models. During the summary meeting, Yang Yuexin, Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society, called on all sectors of society to actively participate in the promotion and practice of nutrition and health, and work together to build a healthy China, achieve the goal of national health, and create a healthy eating environment for Chinese children.
