New Trends in the Information and Communication Industry: Embracing AI Beyond 5G
2024-07-08
"This flying car is the latest version of Xiaopeng Huitian's Traveler X2, specially brought from Shenzhen." At the recently held 2024 World Mobile Communication Conference (Shanghai) (hereinafter referred to as the "2024MWC Shanghai Exhibition"), staff from China Telecom introduced it to the audience. Traveler X2 is the "star" in the exhibition hall, attracting many viewers to stop and take photos. As the world's largest, oldest, and most influential exhibition in the field of mobile communication, the World Mobile Communications Conference is known as the "Mobile Communications Vanguard" by the industry. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the World Mobile Congress landing in Shanghai. The 2024MWC Shanghai Exhibition focuses on the theme of "Future First", focusing on three major areas: "Beyond 5G", "Artificial Intelligence Economy", and "Digital Manufacturing", exploring the latest trends and technological directions in the global mobile communication industry. The reporter learned from the 2024MWC Shanghai Exhibition that as of the end of May 2024, China has built a total of 3.837 million 5G base stations, accounting for 60% of the world's total 5G base stations. Experts and scholars attending the conference generally believe that China should accelerate the deep integration of new generation information technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence (AI), and continuously promote new businesses, models, and formats. Empowering the internet with intelligence and enhancing digital productivity through AI technology and its applications is an important lever for terminal product innovation. AI has become the focus of the 2024MWC Shanghai exhibition, with operators, equipment manufacturers, and terminal manufacturers showcasing their innovative achievements in the field of AI. Especially in the context of the first commercial year of 5G-A, the importance of AI as one of the root technologies of network automation is becoming increasingly prominent. AI is restructuring the way information is produced, processed, transmitted, and interacted, bringing new opportunities to the mobile AI era. On the one hand, the application of technologies such as AIGC (Generative Artificial Intelligence) will accelerate the explosive growth of network traffic; On the other hand, the diversified development of AI terminals, such as digital humans and intelligent vehicles, will greatly expand the scale of connectivity and promote the arrival of the era of ubiquitous terminals. Huawei Director and ICT Product and Solution President Yang Chaobin predicts that by 2030, AI will be applied to tens of thousands of industry segments, with the number of AI assistant users reaching 1 billion, and the number of users in digital live streaming, smart homes, embodied intelligence, and other fields reaching 100 million. This undoubtedly poses higher requirements for the level of network automation, operational efficiency, and other aspects. Yang Chaobin mentioned the concept of "empowering the internet with intelligence and elevating the digital productivity of the network", which means promoting the development of the network towards higher levels of automation and intelligence through the application of AI technology, and achieving a leap in productivity. Specifically, the first step is to introduce a communication big model to achieve precise perception and intelligent analysis of network data, thereby efficiently solving problems such as network complexity, accuracy, and efficiency. Secondly, building an intelligent operation and maintenance system to enhance the level of network automation. Intelligent monitoring, prediction, and decision-making can achieve real-time monitoring and early warning of network status, as well as rapid diagnosis and repair of network faults. "AI technology is an important factor supporting the commercial success of 5G-A." Yang Chaobin believes that AI driving the telecommunications industry to a higher level is an inevitable trend, but it is also a complex and lengthy process that requires the entire industry to work together and seize new opportunities in the mobile AI era. During the 2024MWC Shanghai exhibition, Huawei released the "Kaicheng Plan" for AI network access. This plan aims to strengthen cooperation with global operators and comprehensively improve network productivity by building a wireless intelligent ecological environment that is co created, symbiotic, and mutually beneficial. The first phase of the plan will empower 1000 site engineers within six months, enabling them to manage over 10000 base station sites, with initial coverage in five cities: Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Bangkok, Jinan, and Shenzhen. This measure will not only strengthen the construction of network infrastructure in these cities, but also improve network operation efficiency through intelligent management. Synesthesia Integration, Helping Low Altitude Economy Take Off Recently, a super large drone transported hundreds of kilograms of fresh sea fish from Zhoushan waters to Shanghai. In the past, it took 3 hours to transport by cargo ship, but now low altitude transportation only takes 1 hour. How did change occur? Between Zhoushan and Shanghai, the world's first 100 kilometer level 5G-A integrated cross sea route low altitude network coverage has been achieved. Low altitude transportation involves multiple aspects such as communication, navigation, and monitoring of drones, and requires extremely high communication network requirements. "By applying 5G-A synesthesia integrated large angle technology, the base station can provide communication services to the ground and low altitude. Its large bandwidth uplink and downlink capabilities can support unmanned aerial vehicles to transmit information in real-time." Shanghai Mobile technology expert Chen Wenqi introduced. The advancement of 5G-A technology has opened up vast space for the development of low altitude economy. At the 2024MWC Shanghai exhibition site, major telecommunications operators and equipment vendors have set up dedicated low altitude economic exhibition areas on their booths, releasing multiple new technologies and product services. Various products and technologies such as logistics drones, satellite communication vehicles, and low altitude intelligent networking are overwhelming, allowing viewers to experience the charm of low altitude economy up close. The takeoff of low altitude economy cannot be achieved without the support of 5G-A integrated sensing technology. It is one of the important innovative technologies of 5G-A, which realizes the deep integration of communication and perception capabilities. With advanced signal processing algorithms and communication technology, it endows the communication network with all-round perception ability of the environment and target objects, and can output key information such as distance, speed, position, and angle. "The 5G-A integrated sensory technology has the characteristics of multi sensory, naturalness, interactivity, and intelligence, and has huge application potential in low altitude economy, smart transportation, and other fields." Xu Chang, Deputy General Manager of the Communication Industry Research Center of CCID Consulting, introduced that traditional communication technology and perception technology have independently developed and evolved. The integrated sensing technology integrates core infrastructure such as communication base stations and satellite communication, integrating perception capabilities into the communication system, and building an efficient collaborative network system. The integrated technology of synesthesia can solve problems such as dense buildings, poor stability of satellite navigation signals, and poor economic efficiency of dense radar deployment in low altitude flight. It can also support multi-target detection and continuous tracking and reporting of complete cross regional trajectories, providing network support for low altitude transportation, security, and promoting the large-scale evolution of low altitude economy. At present, the typical application scenario of 5G-A integrated sensing technology is the control of low altitude flying drones. Through network radio waves, key information such as the position, speed, and trajectory of drones can be sensed and detected, achieving low altitude flight management of drones, effectively avoiding air collisions, and monitoring illegal flights. During the 2024MWC Shanghai exhibition, Bi Qi, Chief Scientist of China Telecom, said that drones have broad market prospects in areas such as express delivery and takeaway delivery, and are expected to drive an annual revenue growth of about 7.8% in the operator drone market, thus creating a new era of high-end Internet of Things through 5G-A. With major operators accelerating their layout in multiple aspects such as low altitude communication infrastructure, intelligent terminals, and cloud platforms, the development of low altitude economy is pressing the "acceleration key". According to incomplete statistics, since the beginning of this year, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Chongqing, Beijing and other places have successively introduced policies to promote the high-quality development of low altitude economic industries. Suzhou, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Guiyang and other places have successively established low altitude economic industry funds, with a scale of up to 20 billion yuan, to stimulate industrial development.
