World Intellectual Property Organization: China ranks first in the world in terms of patent applications for generative artificial intelligence

According to a report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization on the 3rd, from 2014 to 2023, the number of applications for generative artificial intelligence patents in China exceeded 38000, ranking first in the world and six times that of the second ranked United States. This report on the patent situation of generative artificial intelligence by the World Intellectual Property Organization shows that the global number of patent applications related to generative artificial intelligence reached 54000 between 2014 and 2023, with over 25% of patents published last year. The report states that since the emergence of the deep neural network architecture on which the big language model is based in 2017, the number of patents related to generative artificial intelligence has rapidly increased sevenfold, covering multiple fields such as life sciences, document management and publishing, business solutions, industry and manufacturing, transportation, safety, and telecommunications. From a classification perspective, image and video data categories rank first in generative artificial intelligence related patents, while text and voice/music categories rank second and third respectively. The top 10 patent applicants are Tencent, Ping An, Baidu, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IBM, Alibaba Group, Samsung Electronics, the Alphabet, ByteDance and Microsoft. In addition to China, the main source countries for patent applications related to generative artificial intelligence include the United States, South Korea, Japan, and India. By analyzing the trends and data of generative artificial intelligence patents, the World Intellectual Property Organization hopes that this can help people better understand the origins of this rapidly advancing technology and help policymakers plan its development to align with the common interests of humanity.
