Hong Kong teenagers embark on a cultural study tour of the Gelao ethnic group in Guizhou

2024-07-03

On the afternoon of July 1st, 46 teachers and students from Ningbo Second High School in Hong Kong and Wang Jinhui Primary and Secondary School affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist University arrived in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province by high-speed rail. They will visit Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County in Zunyi City and Dejiang County in Tongren City, where the Gelao people are concentrated, for a 6-day Gelao cultural study activity. It is understood that the "Hong Kong Youth Gelao Culture Training Event" is jointly organized by the Ethnic and Folk Art Development Center of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guizhou Province, and the China Ethnic and Folk Culture and Art Exchange Association (Hong Kong). The aim is to enable Hong Kong youth to understand the colorful ethnic culture and experience the charm of multi-ethnic integration and development in Chinese culture. Exquisite costumes, precious cultural relics, and interesting folk customs... On July 2nd, as we walked into the Gelao Ethnic Culture Museum in Wuchuan County, Hong Kong teachers and students were immediately attracted by the colorful exhibition in front of us. In addition to carefully listening to the introductions of the guide, many students also take out their cameras or notebooks to take photos and take notes. After the visit, Hong Kong teenagers also attended a lecture on Gelao culture. This is my first time visiting Guizhou and also my first time learning about Gelao culture. I have previously learned about the relevant content online in advance, but the experience of on-site visits is very different Liu Yuzhen, a freshman student at Wong Kam Fai Primary and Secondary School affiliated with Hong Kong Baptist University, said that living in our multi-ethnic country, every ethnic group is like a heavy cultural history book, worth slowly reading. Guizhou Province, located in the southwestern hinterland of China, is a multi-ethnic region that has nurtured rich and colorful ethnic cultures for thousands of years. As one of the long-standing ethnic groups in Guizhou, the Gelao ethnic group has unique characteristics. Wuchuan County, one of the locations for this study activity, is the county with the largest population of Gelao people in the country. It is known as the "source of Gelao" due to its distinctive Gelao culture and well preserved Gelao ancient villages. Yu Zhaoke, Executive Vice President of the Hong Kong Membership Association of the China Federation of Literary and Artistic Circles, stated that organizing Hong Kong youth to conduct Gelao cultural training in Guizhou aims to deepen their understanding of the inheritance and protection of Gelao culture, draw nourishment from the colorful Chinese culture, continuously expand their horizons, enrich their thinking, and enhance their awareness of multi-ethnic integration and development. Since its launch in 2010, the Hong Kong and Macau Youth Ethnic Culture Study Program has gradually become one of the important cultural activities for Hong Kong and Macau youth to learn and exchange in mainland China. According to Yu Zhaoke, as of now, more than a thousand Hong Kong and Macao teenagers have gone to more than 20 ethnic settlements in mainland China, including Buyi, Naxi, Dai, and Hani, to carry out study activities.
