Constructing the "Strongest Brain" with Billions of Calculations in One Second

2024-06-13

Entering the computer room area of the National Supercomputing Jinan Center (hereinafter referred to as "Jinan Supercomputing"), the "Shanhe" supercomputing platform is operating at high speed. The hosts are arranged in rows and connected to each other, with indicator lights flashing regularly. The blue characters "mountains and rivers" on the body are particularly eye-catching. As the largest heterogeneous supercomputing cluster in the country, the "Shanhe" supercomputing platform has a high-performance computing power of 60PFlops (1PFlops represents 10 billion floating-point operations per second), artificial intelligence computing power of 1000Pops (1Pops represents 10 billion intelligent calculations per second), storage capacity of 245PB, and comprehensive computing power at the forefront of the world. How strong is the "brain" that performs billions of intelligent calculations in one second? With the support of this computing power, virtual digital humans can complete intelligent question answering by connecting to large models, and can complete training in just over a hundred hours; The accuracy of air quality forecasting can reach a range of 2 kilometers, which is equivalent to being specific to every community... In May 2023, at the ISC2023 World High Performance Computing Conference held in Hamburg, Germany, Jinan Supercomputing's validation computing cluster surpassed the historical best record by 15 times and topped the global IO500 list. From being controlled by others to leading the world, China's supercomputers have gradually reduced their footprint, energy consumption and costs, while their overall performance and computing power have been improving over time through upgrades and renovations. In 2011, Jinan Supercomputer built China's first supercomputer, the Shenwei Blu ray, which was built entirely with domestic processors and system software and had billions of cycles. In 2022, the new generation of Shenwei supercomputer - "Shenwei Blue Ray II" was launched, with independent research and development of all core components and system software, achieving complete independent and controllable core technology in the supercomputing field. Compared to "Shenwei Blu ray", "Shenwei Blu ray II" has reduced its footprint to one-third of its original size, but its computing power has increased by 14 times. "The development pattern of China's supercomputing is consistent with that of the world's supercomputing, and this is even more advanced than Moore's Law." Pan Jingshan, Deputy Director of Jinan Supercomputing and Dean of Jinan Supercomputing Research Institute, said. Moore's Law was proposed by Gordon Moore, one of the founders of Intel. According to this law, the performance of a chip doubles approximately every year and a half. For supercomputers, performance can be improved by 1000 times every 10 years. The strongest brain requires the strongest application. Through extensive interdisciplinary and cross unit cooperation, the application achievements based on Jinan supercomputing have emerged frequently. On the big screen of Jinan Supercomputing's National Ecological Environment Monitoring Big Data Supercomputing Cloud Center, digital leaps and real-time displays of air quality at over 5000 stations across the country. With the help of the computing power of the "Shanhe" supercomputing platform, the accuracy of air quality forecasting has been improved from 5 kilometers to a range of 2 kilometers. "An accuracy of 5 kilometers is equivalent to a forecast range accurate to a small community, while 2 kilometers means accurate to a venue." Pan Jingshan said that at last year's Hangzhou Asian Games, the air quality forecast range was accurate to every sports venue, achieving a breakthrough of "hour level" and "kilometer level". "With the strong computing power support of Jinan Supercomputing, more than 3000 research institutes, universities, high-tech enterprises, and government units in fields such as weather forecasting and climate prediction, marine environment simulation analysis, information security, industrial simulation, engineering computing, financial big data analysis, and smart cities have all boarded the 'computing power fast'." Wu Xiaoming, director of Shandong Provincial Computing Center (National Supercomputing Jinan Center), said. For example, what shape can high-speed rail be built to resist sudden crosswinds? What is the distance between two parallel railway tracks? It can avoid collisions when two high-speed trains meet, without causing land waste due to being too far away... If these problems are solved through real experiments, it will require high costs. However, by establishing simulation models through supercomputing for calculation and testing, these problems can be solved at a low cost and more efficiently. Supercomputing empowers thousands of industries, but no matter how strong the computing power is, if it cannot be connected into a network, it is just an island. In July 2022, Jinan Supercomputing officially launched the first supercomputing Internet project in China, promoting the construction of "Shandong Computing Network" covering 16 cities in the province; In May 2024, the "Shandong Computing Network Platform" was officially launched, strongly promoting the construction of the national computing power network. After continuous scientific research and exploration, Jinan Supercomputing has achieved multiple technological breakthroughs in the field of Shandong computing network construction, overcoming a number of core "bottleneck" technical difficulties in high-speed network communication, resource perception scheduling, computing power network integration, and security. Pan Jingshan said that in the next step, Jinan Supercomputing will further explore and optimize the software and hardware involved in the supercomputing Internet, and strive to achieve the goal of "running domestic cars in domestic lanes". With the extension of supercomputing networks, the vision of "building computing networks like power grids, operating computing networks like the Internet, and allowing users to use computing power like water and electricity" is gradually becoming reality.
