June 10 is the Loong Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Loong Boat races are staged in many regions of Hong Kong. Among them, Stanley, Shatin, Tai Po and Aberdeen are the four most exciting and large-scale races. Among the numerous Loong Boat events, Stanley International Loong Boat Championship has the largest number of participants. This year, more than 150 Loong Boat teams from Hong Kong and overseas participated. About 5000 Chinese and foreign athletes competed in 54 preliminary, semi-final and final events. Due to the total length of the track being 270 meters and the short distance, the race conditions are relatively compact and intense. Contestant Katherine and her family arrived in Stanley at 8am. She said that she had participated in the Stanley International Loong Boat Championships for many times, and the competition was fierce and challenging. The oldest Loong Boat race venue in Hong Kong is the Loong Boat race held by Aberdeen, which has a history of more than 100 years. Chen Fuming, chairman of the Preparatory Committee for Aberdeen Loong Boat Race, said that although there were many fishing boats docked along the coast and the race track was narrow, fishermen would cheer up Loong Boat athletes on the boat and the atmosphere was quite lively. The event gathers 10 large Loong Boat teams to participate. The "big dragon" is mostly made of teak. Each boat club will also decorate the Loong Boat with its own distinctive features. On the other side, the 2024 Shatian Loong Boat Race will be held in Chengmen River in the morning. In the competition, all participating teams worked together to row boats and rushed to the finish line. "This is the traditional history and culture of Hong Kong, and we should continue to do a good job in inheriting and deepening the culture." Qiu Dagen, a member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was the presenter of the Loong Boat Race on the same day. He said that the confidence of the team members in the scientific and technological community this year has been growing after many times of hard training every week. It was very gratifying to see a large number of citizens coming to watch the race. Yang Runxiong, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, attended the Loong Boat Competition Carnival in Sai Kung District on the same day. In his speech, he said that the SAR government would strengthen the promotion of Loong Boat race culture in Hong Kong in mainland China and overseas, attract more tourists, make Loong Boat Festival one of the festivals for tourists to participate in Hong Kong, and further stimulate the development of Hong Kong's tourism industry.
