The Frankfurt Book Fair makes its debut at the Shenzhen International Cultural Fair
2024-06-04
The 20th Cultural Expo was grandly held in Shenzhen from May 23rd to 27th. This year's Cultural Expo has comprehensively upgraded to the international level in the field of exhibitions, and a large number of "first exhibition" highlights continue to emerge. The highly anticipated Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany also made its debut at the CIIE, following a visit by Ding Shizhao, Party Secretary and President of Shenzhen Newspaper Group, to the Chairman of the Frankfurt Book Fair in November 2023. Through this meeting, cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair for this year was reached. Among them, three cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions with international perspectives at the Frankfurt Book Fair have attracted industry attention: the Compendium of Materia Medica Pharmacy: Wenshude Translation Art Exhibition, the Beauty of Books: Frankfurt Book Fair 2022-2024 Most Beautiful Book Art Exhibition, and the German Media Design University Interactive Art Exhibition. This exhibition invited Chinese contemporary artist Lin Jiangquan as the curator. "Compendium of Materia Medica Pharmacy": Ole D? Ring, spokesperson for the Wen Shude Translation Art Exhibition and a renowned German philosopher and professor at the Free University of Berlin, introduced the "Compendium of Materia Medica Pharmacy" for more than ten minutes at the press conference of the Shenzhen Cultural Expo. At the installation exhibition site, he personally went on stage to perform "re installation", creating new sequences, and holding the third volume "Compendium of Materia Medica" to search for the hidden four volumes among the crushed traditional Chinese medicine. Ole D? Ring's installation art piece "Compendium of Materia Medica" at the exhibition site is not only an ancient pharmacopoeia, but also a vibrant museum. Professor Paul U. Unschuld, a prominent figure in the German medical community, devoted over 20 years to studying the Compendium of Materia Medica and translating it into English. In 2023, the final volume of the translation will be published. This exhibition showcases all 10 translated versions and 3 additional dictionaries, along with over a thousand partial collection level replicas of ancient Chinese Chinese literature collected by Professor Wen Shude. According to the English translation of "Compendium of Materia Medica", multiple artistic works were showcased on site at the Cultural Expo: installation art "Pharmacy of Compendium of Materia Medica", interactive art "Restoring the Ancient" You "in Chinese Prescriptions", virtual art "Translating One Medicine", "40 Years of Translation Time Difference", and so on. Professor Wen Shude, a prominent figure in the German medical community, uses the thinking of traditional Chinese medicine to translate traditional Chinese medicine works, and the English version of "Compendium of Materia Medica" was also created as a pharmacy during the exhibition, forming a dialogue relationship of intertextuality. The 10 volumes and 3 additional dictionaries used in the English version of the Compendium of Materia Medica were unexpectedly placed in the drawers of the traditional Chinese medicine wardrobe - some of the medicinal powders in the drawers were made by crushing old books from the Compendium of Materia Medica; Some books and research articles in the Compendium of Materia Medica are made and published by grinding traditional Chinese medicine into paper. The book of medicine and the book of medicine have sparked people's reflection: whether medicine is a book or a book is medicine, their boundaries have become blurred. Paper Cuttings collages of books with dozens of drug names in each drawer, and the whole hundred eye cabinet forms the general catalog of Compendium of Materia Medica, which is translated into the device version and physical space of Compendium of Materia Medica, showing that Compendium of Materia Medica is also a medicine and a prescription in the world. In the interactive art "Restoring the Ancient" You "in Chinese Prescriptions", multiple ancient Chinese prescriptions are exhibited as text art, and next to each frame of the Chinese prescription is a medicine package prepared according to the Chinese prescription and a patient's physical problem placement box. Viewers can fill in their medical records and put their physical problems into the placement box, searching for their ancient selves, imagining their lives in ancient times, and restoring the ancient "you" in the Chinese prescription. The three form a mutual relationship between the text and the physical object, expanding the broader transformation within the original concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, time, and life, and expanding the concept of intertextuality between patients, medical practitioners, and translators. The other two virtual arts are being released online. In "Translating One Medicine", the cover of Shude's translated work "Compendium of Materia Medica" features traditional Chinese medicine; In the virtual art "The Time Difference of 20 Years for Translators", a translation of Professor Wen Deshu's English version of "Compendium of Materia Medica" appears in a small wall caused by the 20 Chinese versions of "Compendium of Materia Medica", symbolizing Professor Wen's 20 years of translation work and time, as well as the 20th anniversary history of the Cultural Expo. The Beauty of Books: The Frankfurt Book Fair 2022-2024 Most Beautiful Book Art Exhibition is a group exhibition of contemporary art, featuring 138 artists, architects, and authors. The Frankfurt Book Fair 2022-2024 selected many categories of the most beautiful books in Germany in the past three years, including art, architecture, literature, children's, social sciences, and lifestyle guides. The curator uses the concept of "transmitting another gene" to change the way books are displayed and read through artistic concepts and strategies, thereby transforming them into interactive installation art works. Each book series hides the spine and makes the content invisible, with only one or a few representative books revealing the spine. About 100 spectators were invited to take out the books one by one and place them on the bookshelf in a way that exposes the spine of the books. As each book begins to reveal its true self, readers find a new self, and the exhibition is announced to be over - this is also a ceremony for the opening and closing of the exhibition. The interactive art of books, "Transferring Another Gene," as the object of knowledge production, the form of intertextuality and mutual graphics has also sparked interdisciplinary thinking among the audience present. When the content of books is covered up, it shows that information technology has brought people a barrier and virtual comparison, and the sense of shared roles in life has become flattened. This is because we enter knowledge anxiety amidst the excess amount of information, and the exhibition guides the audience to think about how to cope with the landscape of wordless telling. The interactive art exhibition of the German Media Design University is part of the Frankfurt Book Fair, where "Inside and Outside the Machine: Berlin Media Design Institute Interactive Art Exhibition" is an interactive work in a specific field that is eye-catching. In the interactive work "This Table is No Distance from Berlin", the artist interacts through virtual and on-site micro interventions. The table for virtual on-site consultation through materials was moved from the early classrooms of the college, and each consulting student can experience the scene of attending classes in Germany. The table displays a sentence: "This table is not far from Berlin, and when you come here, you are at the Berlin Media Design Institute." Humanity is in an unprecedented era - immigrating to the digital planet. We are cultivating dream engineers for the future digital world. In the interactive work "This is MDH", the artist gives two postcards with their names written on them to students who come for consultation. One can be sent to Germany for permanent collection, and the other is left for students to keep - being recorded is the best evidence of existence, in order to interactively preserve the permanent relationship and eternal time between Chinese students and the German Media Design University. These two interactions have deeply moved many viewers of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The Frankfurt Book Fair, known for its interactive art and interaction, can be traced back more than 500 years. At that time, German John Gutenberg invented the revolutionary lead alloy movable type printing technology in Europe, which directly promoted the rise of Western publishing industry and laid a solid foundation for global cultural exchange. In 1949, the German Book Industry Association founded the first modern Frankfurt Book Fair. Nowadays, the Frankfurt Book Fair has become an important gathering place for professionals in the book publishing industry, attracting around 200000 professionals from more than 100 countries and regions to come together and exchange ideas with each other every year. It is known as the "World Cultural Vanguard" and "World Capital of Thought", and has become an important platform for cultural exchange in the world. As the world's largest publishing industry exhibition, the Frankfurt Book Fair is held annually from the first Wednesday to the second Monday of October in Frankfurt for a period of 6 days. The addition of the Frankfurt Book Fair this time is a recognition of the continuous improvement of the internationalization level of the exhibition, the establishment of a global cultural industry exchange and cooperation platform, and the active promotion of foreign cultural exchange and economic and trade cooperation in the Cultural and Industrial Fair. This year marks the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, as well as the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany. The linkage of this book fair has achieved cross-cultural exchange and integration, providing more opportunities and innovative ideas for mutual exchange and learning between China and Germany, and will build a broader platform for cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.
