International Observation | What Changes Will the First Female President Bring to Mexico

2024-06-04

On the 3rd, Claudia Simbaum, the presidential candidate of the ruling party National Renaissance Movement, announced in the capital city of Mexico City that she has won the presidential election and will become the first female president in Mexican history. She will take office on October 1st. Analysts predict that after taking office, Sinbaum will continue the political and social reform measures of current President Lopez in domestic affairs, and pay more attention to personal style shaping in diplomacy, further promoting world multipolarity. The preliminary fast vote results released by the Mexican National Election Commission on the evening of the 2nd show that Simbaum received over 58.3% of the vote, while the opposition coalition presidential candidate Sochiter Galvez received over 26.6% of the vote, and the Civic Movement presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Menez received over 9.9% of the vote. Sinbaum won the presidential election by a significant margin. Simbaum stated at a press conference early on the 3rd that the election results fully demonstrate "the Mexican people's recognition of the national plan.". On the early morning of June 3rd, in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, Simbaum gave a speech at a celebration event. Xinhua News Agency (Photo by Francisco Canedo) Regarding the parliamentary elections also held on the 2nd, Simbaum stated that based on the preliminary rapid vote counting results, her campaign alliance has also gained a majority advantage. Simbaum was born in Mexico City in 1962 and holds a doctoral degree. He has published numerous articles in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable development. She is seen by the media as a "political student" of the current President Lopez. In 2000, the then mayor of Mexico, Lopez, appointed Simbaum as the director of the city's environmental agency. In 2018, Simbaum was elected as the Mayor of Mexico City. This is considered an important milestone for Mexican women's political participation. Continuing the "Fourth Revolution" regarding internal affairs, Simbaum stated during her campaign that she will continue to promote the "Fourth Revolution" after taking office. Since taking office as president in 2018, Lopez has actively promoted a series of reform plans that he called the "Fourth Revolution", with the goal of optimizing the political environment, increasing infrastructure construction, improving people's livelihoods, and focusing on issues such as combating corruption, eliminating poverty, and energy reform, achieving certain results. Analysts believe that Simbaum will continue Lopez's political and social reform measures, with a focus on issues such as security, economy, and education. On June 2nd, at a polling station in the Mexican capital Mexico City, Simbaum displayed his voter ID card. According to Ignacio Martinez, an international expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico is currently facing serious security issues such as drug trafficking, weapon smuggling, and violent homicide, according to Xinhua News Agency reporter Li Muzi. Reducing insecurity and combating organized crime will become the primary challenges faced by Simbaum after taking office. Haime Tamayo, an international expert at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, pointed out that during his tenure as the mayor of a Mexican city, Simbaum has vigorously cracked down on violent crime and achieved certain results. These political experiences and propositions will also be reflected in the policies of the new government. In terms of economy, Martinez believes that Mexico is currently facing problems such as fiscal deficits, economic development bottlenecks, and high inflation. Simbaum needs to focus on the domestic market and sustainable development, and encourage investment. Tamayo believes that given his academic background, Sinbaum may increase support for higher education and the field of science. Regarding diplomacy, Simbaum stated during his campaign that he is willing to strengthen relations with North American countries and the role of the US Mexico Canada Agreement in strengthening dialogue on economic, immigration, and security issues. She also advocates promoting development through cooperation, continuing to expand relations with Latin American countries, and establishing a country that is open to the world. David Garcia, a scholar at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said that Lopez's foreign policy is relatively conservative, leaving room for Simbaum to showcase his diplomatic style. Simbaum can leverage its advantages in international organizations and other multilateral settings, such as addressing climate change and developing new energy, to enhance Mexico's international status. Tamayo believes that Simbaum holds a firm and positive attitude towards world multipolarity, will further develop relations with Asian and European countries, and oppose unipolar hegemony.
