On June 1st, it was reported that China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Radio and Television jointly announced the launch of commercial promotion of 5G cross network roaming at the 2024 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day conference hosted by the China Communications Society. 5G cross network roaming refers to the ability of users to access other operators' 5G networks and continue using 5G services when their respective operators do not have 5G network coverage. Carrying out 5G cross network roaming can effectively improve the efficiency of network resource utilization, enhance the coverage level of 5G networks in remote areas, and enhance the user 5G service experience. On May 17, 2023, the world's first 5G cross network roaming trial commercial was launched in Xinjiang. Since its launch, the number of daily roaming users, roaming data volume, and roaming call duration have exceeded 34000 people, 2000GB, and 200 hours, respectively, effectively verifying the commercial feasibility of 5G cross network roaming on the current network. On the basis of preliminary work, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will guide relevant units to carry out commercial 5G cross network roaming based on the evaluation of roaming needs, take effective regulatory measures, continuously optimize the quality of 5G cross network roaming services, and ensure efficient and stable 5G cross network roaming. Zhang Yunming, a member of the Party Group and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at the meeting that we should fully leverage the important role of the information and communication industry as an accelerator, amplifier, and multiplier, cultivate and develop new quality productive forces, and better support and serve the new industrialization. He stated that we should take technological innovation as the fundamental point, strengthen research on basic theories and major scientific issues, accelerate breakthroughs in key core and cutting-edge technologies, and build an information and communication innovation system and innovation ecosystem.
