Focusing on the development of global geoparks and promoting international cooperation in cultural tourism and ecological protection

The second Golden Egg Forum of the Hong Kong World Geopark was held in Hong Kong from May 27th to 28th, 2024. This forum is hosted by the World Geoparks Club and aims to promote the protection and resource utilization of world geoparks, as well as international exchanges and cooperation in cultural tourism and ecological protection. This activity has created a platform for communication and cooperation, attracting representatives from various geological parks, experts and scholars, industry elites, and media representatives to participate. More than 90 guests from 17 units gathered together to explore the development path of geological parks, witness new milestones in the geological park industry, and paint a new chapter in the construction of geological parks. On May 27th, the opening ceremony of the Second Golden Egg Forum of World Geoparks was held at the Golden Egg Convention Center of the Hong Kong Science Park. Zhang Jiacheng, President of the World Geopark Club, delivered a welcome speech. The President of the World Geoparks Club, Cheung Ka shing, Commissioner for Civil Affairs in Tai Po, Hong Kong, Chen Qiaomin, and the President of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Association, Professor Cheung Chin, delivered speeches as the main guests, emphasizing the importance of geoparks in education, cultural heritage, and sustainable development. Afterwards, representatives from various geological parks, experts and scholars spoke separately, sharing their unique insights in their respective fields. The Director (Education) of the Hong Kong Agriculture and Fisheries Department Geoparks, Wu Shanbin, gave a keynote speech on "The Protection and Development of World Geoparks". On the one hand, he showcased the natural beauty of Hong Kong Geoparks, and on the other hand, he detailed the characteristics and protection measures of Hong Kong Geoparks, as well as the achievements of the park in education and community participation. Dr. Li Jiangfeng, Director (Education) of the Hong Kong Agriculture and Fisheries Department Geoparks, and Chief Advisor of the World Geopark Club, delivered a speech entitled "Focus and Development Trends of World Geoparks". Under the wave of globalization, geological parks are increasingly attracting people's attention. He deeply analyzed the opportunities and challenges faced by geoparks in the process of globalization, and provided clear directions and valuable guidance for their future sustainable development. In addition, Li Dongjun, Director of the Jingbo Lake World Geopark in Heilongjiang Province, and Li Jianfeng, Director of the Tenglongdong World Geopark in Enshi Grand Canyon, Hubei Province, introduced the geological characteristics, biodiversity, and cultural value of relevant geoparks, and shared their experiences and plans in protection, management, and promotion; Lu Lin, member of the Standing Committee of the Mount Wuyi Municipal Committee, head of the United Front Work Department, and vice mayor of Mount Wuyi, Liu Qian, deputy director of the Wuyishan Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Center, He Zhiyong, the Mount Wuyi Investment Department, and Gao Chunhui, representative of Ningde Geopark, introduced the unique local tea culture, rich tourism resources, and superior investment environment in detail; Dr. Li Leshi, a renowned polar scientist and global ecological photographer, shared his observations and feelings while working in the polar regions, calling for people to pay attention to global climate issues; Huang Yongheng, Vice Chairman of the Ministry of Commerce and Economics and President of the Youth Association of the PhD think tank, and Gao Hongxun, Advisory Committee Member, gave speeches and shared their valuable experiences. At the opening ceremony of the forum, a roundtable dialogue session was also held, with Bai Jie, General Manager of the South China region of New Oriental Culture and Tourism Group, Shi Junming, Chairman of the Hong Kong Taiwan Travel Agency Industry Association, Ma Jianhua, Chairman of Haikou Leiqiong World Geopark, and Wang Shengfu, General Manager of the Waipoqiao Research Base of Huanggang Dabie Mountain World Geopark, focusing on the theme of "Sustainable Development of World Geopark Culture and Tourism". They shared their views and practical experience on the sustainable development of geopark culture and tourism. The guests present at the roundtable dialogue expressed that this forum not only provides valuable experience for the protection and resource utilization of geological parks, but also injects new vitality into the cultural tourism and ecological conservation of geological parks. Professor Xu Kejian from China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Yang Li from Phoenix TV, and former chairman of the Shibaxiang Township Committee, Liang Fuyuan, among others, put forward suggestions on the theme of this forum during the open exchange session, contributing to the sustainable development of cultural and tourism in the world's geological parks. After the completion of each stage of the opening ceremony, Wu Kejian, President of the World Geopark Club, gave a concluding speech, reviewing the various stages of the opening ceremony and emphasizing the important role of geoparks in promoting local economic development, cultural inheritance, and ecological protection, pointing out the direction for the future work of geoparks. In addition, a thank-you ceremony was held at the opening ceremony of the forum to recognize individuals and institutions who have made outstanding contributions to the protection and development of geological parks. The guests participating in the opening ceremony took a group photo to commemorate the on-site inspection and enhance their sense of identity and responsibility. On May 28th, the forum organizer held a themed lecture at the Tin Ka bing Lecture Hall of the Education University of Hong Kong. Afterwards, the guests went to the Sai Kung Geopark in Hong Kong for inspection. The President of the World Geopark Club, Wu Kejian, delivered the opening speech at the themed lecture event, and Professor Ho Wing kee, Director of the Department of Science and Environment at the Education University of Hong Kong, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the University. During the keynote lecture, Dr. Li Jiangfeng took a group photo and emphasized the importance of geoparks in ecological protection and environmental education, with the theme of "Understanding Geoparks and Caring for Beautiful Homes"; Professor Xu Kejian explored the protection and management of geoparks from the perspective of UNESCO; Dr. Yang Zhihao and lecturer Wen Meixin gave in-depth explanations on STEAM education and the wisdom of "harmony between heaven and humanity". After each lecture, there is a Q&A session where participants interact with experts to delve deeper into the content related to geological parks. The Hong Kong Geopark is renowned for its rich geological history and diverse landforms. It is not only a paradise for nature enthusiasts, but also an important natural education platform in Hong Kong. For this purpose, the guests went to the Sai Kung Geopark in Hong Kong for a sea survey. Guests went to the Sai Kung Geopark in Hong Kong to conduct in-depth research on the sea. It is reported that the second Golden Egg Forum of the World Geoparks, with the theme of "integration, co creation, and sharing", discussed key issues such as the protection, education, resource utilization and management, as well as ecology and sustainable development of geological parks. This forum not only enhances public awareness of the importance of geopark protection, but also promotes cooperation between different regions and institutions, promotes the sharing of relevant knowledge and experience, and injects new vitality into the development of geopark related industries.
