The Wuzhishan area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the central part of Hainan Island, with a total area of 534.08 square kilometers. Within the territory, there is the highest peak of Hainan Island - Wuzhishan, named after the five peaks that are connected like fingers. The highest peak (two peaks) has an altitude of 1867m and is a symbol and business card of Hainan, as well as the "roof" of Hainan. It is understood that Wuzhishan has the largest and most complete forest vegetation type with the highest altitude span on Hainan Island. It is one of the hotspots of biodiversity distribution in China and also a distribution area for many endangered species in Hainan. It has extremely important biodiversity protection value and is a typical tropical rainforest gene bank. On the occasion of International Biodiversity Day in 2024, the reporter came here for a brief visit. "The animal and plant resources here are very abundant. Before 2021, 286 species of terrestrial vertebrate wildlife were discovered in the Wuzhishan area, and now this data has been updated to 345 species." Zhong Shijin, Director of the Wuzhishan Branch of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Management Bureau, said in an introduction. According to the information provided by the local management agency, the vegetation types here can be divided into five types: tropical lowland rainforest, tropical mountain rainforest, tropical subalpine dwarf forest, tropical mountain top shrub, and secondary tropical rainforest. There are 2146 species of wild vascular plants recorded, belonging to 6 species of national level I protected wild plants: Cymbidium convolvulus, Cymbidium grandiflorum, Cymbidium purpureum, Porei, Hainan Cycas, and Fujian Guangdong Cycas (Taiwan Cycas). There are 85 species of national level II protected wild plants. There are also 284 species of plants that are endemic to Hainan, including Hainan Chinese torreya, Shilu Hanxiao, wrinkled oil pill, butterfly tree, Hainan Shaozi, and Hainan Bauhinia. Animal resources are also extremely abundant. According to incomplete surveys and statistics, there are 345 species of terrestrial vertebrate wildlife, 67 species of fish, and over 1700 species of insects. Nine species of wild animals under national level I protection include the round nosed giant lizard, Hainanshan partridge, Hainan peacock pheasant, clouded leopard, small spirit cat, large spirit cat, pangolin, Hainan bittern, and golden spotted beaked phoenix butterfly (the only butterfly species under national level I protection in China). 69 species of wildlife under national level II protection. 39 species listed in Appendix of CITES Convention, 9 species on IUCN Red List, and 43 species on China Red List of Endangered Animals. Walking through the dense and dark rainforest, the towering trees and a wide variety of herbaceous plants left reporters amazed; Along the way, you can also see various peculiar insects and small animals, which make everyone exclaim from time to time. Zhong Shijin told reporters that since the establishment of the national park, the local government and people's awareness of protecting the environment has greatly improved, and the moderate forest tourism activities have also brought economic benefits to the local people, making them more conscious of protecting the ecological environment. The management department has formed a team of 320 forest rangers to guard this tropical rainforest. It is reported that the Wuzhishan area is also the source and watershed of the Wanquan River and Changhua River in Hainan Province. It is one of the core spaces for ecological protection and soil and water conservation in the ecological protection pattern of the Hainan Provincial Overall Plan (2015-2030), and is included in the National Ecological Function Zoning for Biodiversity Protection in Central Hainan Province
