Stable rice bowl and sufficient confidence, the national summer grain harvest has reached 6.5%

2024-05-17

At present, with only half a month left until the busy season of the "Three Summers", various regions and departments are making every effort to promote summer harvest, summer planting, and summer management, and solidify the foundation for a bountiful grain harvest throughout the year. The latest agricultural situation dispatch from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs shows that 6.5% of summer grain has been harvested nationwide. China's grain production is divided into summer grain, early rice, and autumn grain according to seasons, accounting for about 21%, 4%, and 75% of the annual grain production, respectively. Summer grain is the first season of grain production throughout the year, mainly including summer harvested grains, beans, and potatoes. Among them, summer harvest grains mainly include wheat, barley, oats, buckwheat, etc. The growth period of wheat is from October of the previous year to June of that year, and summer grain purchases are generally from mid May to September 30 of that year. In early summer, in the demonstration field of water drought rotation in Shibu Town, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, more than 100 acres of wheat have entered the concentrated maturity period. Farmers are using efficient agricultural machinery to harvest mature wheat, while ensuring the return of wheat grains to the warehouse, and preparing for the next crop of rice planting. "The wheat planted this year is all new varieties with high quality and lodging resistance. Due to good management and awesome and other factors, the average income per mu of land can be increased by about 500 yuan." Zhou Cong, a grain grower, said that rice will be planted as soon as possible after the wheat harvest is completed. "After the autumn harvest, we plan to continue expanding the scale of 'rice wheat rotation' and increase our income for the coming year." Tang Cheng, Deputy Director of the Grain Reserve Department of the State Administration of Grain and Material Reserves, introduced that it is preliminarily estimated that the purchase volume of summer grain in 2024 will be around 70 million tons, a slight increase from 2023, including about 63 million tons of wheat. It is expected that the wheat weighing price will be higher than the minimum purchase price level, and the possibility of launching large-scale market buying is unlikely. To produce good grain, it is even more important to store it well. "Dispatch data shows that six major wheat producing provinces, including Hebei, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Henan, and Hubei, have prepared wheat warehouses with a capacity of nearly 80 million tons, and have initially arranged a summer grain purchase fund of 110 billion yuan. Various regions have sufficient purchasing warehouses, sufficient purchasing funds, smooth logistics transportation, and a good market order, and all preparations for summer grain purchase are basically ready," Tang Cheng said. Lv Xiutao, Deputy Director of the Planting Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, stated that in 2024, most of the 11 major wheat producing provinces have seen an increase in their area, and the implementation of technologies such as deep plowing and suppression, semi precision sowing, and micro spray irrigation with integrated water and fertilizer for large-scale yield improvement is relatively in place. Timely prevention and control of diseases and pests such as wheat stem rot, stripe rust, and scab have resulted in better overall growth of wheat compared to the previous year. Especially, the number of ears per mu, which is one of the three factors affecting yield, has basically been finalized and shows a clear trend of increase, laying the foundation for a bountiful summer harvest.
